VERY OT!! Would you get navigation system package in your new car?

I am getting a new car soon and one of the "packages" is a navigation/pano sunroof/rear view camera for 2.6k

Now, for me - never had those accessories in a car, seem cool.. BUT 2.6k!!!! That is huge price for those upgrades.

Have you done it? Maps get out of date fast? Just not worth the price tag?

The map system should update periodically via the provider. Rear-view cameras are pretty cool, especially when you are hauling stuff that blocks the rearview mirror.

Tell them you'll pay half that, or you'll walk.

No. Removable navigations systems are far more feature rich and easier to update. Some of the factory nav systems have very poor routing. Smartphones make great GPS navigation aids, as they can get real time traffic reports to you.

Mainly because I have been driving since 12,, and in over 40 years have never needed such.

I would get them. Sunroof's are awesome. Built in GPSs are just much better to use. One of the benefits being they pause your music while it's playing so you don't miss instructions. But if it has an iPhone cable or bluetooth you can probably get that to happen through your car speakers. Generally car GPSs can be lacking but the position of the built in screens is very convenient.

Removable GPS is much easier to update, and has better features. Also, you only need one for your whole fleet, and can get a good Garmin Nuvi for about $100

Having repaired many,, and Fiber-glassed over a few,, I would avoid a car with a hole in the roof.

Yeah, the new car will have bluetooth capability.. I feel it will look at good, but 2.6k more is just sooo high for such luxuries. I've been looking at after market rear cameras and you can get a good one for a small fraction of the package price. Just wouldn't have that nice Navigation 7inch screen..

I think I will do what another posted suggested and take half the difference between no package to package and ask for that.

ie.. car is 21k, with package is 23.5k , so I'll offer: 22.2k or something like.

well, the problem is here - the car I plan on getting: has a sunroof with the Limited edition built in. The navigation package was gonna add a pano, so there would be two on the car.

so, it will have one automatically.

Don't most "sunroofs" have issue with the water resevoirs getting clogged and that can be easily handled by a diligent owner?

There are several issues. leaks being most common. And cleaning drains daily will help. They also rust out. Malfunction. etc.

Nice at times (when they work),, but more PITA than I care for.

As far as the GPS, I prefer the portable ones, you can put them on your dash so you don't have to take your eyes off the road so much like you would if you had to look down at the center console.

Just a quick question. Have you bought a new car before? There are few things to know so you get the best deal and don't get hosed. I'll post a few here just in case.

You should know the dealer invoice on the car and any option packages. You then subtract any incentives (yours and the dealers) and make an offer a couple hundred or so over that.

The last guy you deal with, that does the paperwork, is the biggest shark (usually the best closer) in the place. Whatever addons he tries to sell you at the last minute, turn them down. Most are B.S. and you can get them at a better price.

You probably know that already, just thought I would throw it out there just in case.

Upgrade your phone to a galaxy note 2 or S3, or get a nexus seven tablet, and just buy a cheap bluetooth backup camera on ebay.

I don't have a backup camera yet but plan to get one this year, I have been using my note 2 and an Imagnet car mount for about a year now for gps, and bluetoooth streaming music to a 100 dollar cheapo head unit I installed, and its awesome, way cheaper than your package and it can be moved to another vehicle in under 5 minutes.

The smaller Imagnet is strong enough to hold my note 2 to my curvy dashboard very well, even in rough conditions at high speed. If you go with the nexus 7 or larger device, you would probly wanna spring for the larger mount to be safe.

In the vid they show a case on the devices, they also ship 2 sizes of thin powder coated metal plates that you can alternatively place between the back cover and battery and it works without the case, that's how I use it, but if you went with a nexus 7 its battery compartment isnt accessible so the case would be necessary.

I have GPS and a rear view camera. I like them both. It's nice having the GPS built in. Less of a hassle. The rear view camera is awesome.

Naw, its' not a toyota. I am getting a midsize sedan - family oriented. But I really dislike the way the Camry's look. Not happy about the Accords either. I've been looking around and it seems for the most bang for the buck and best warranty is the the Hyundai Sonata Limited 2013. I hate spending money, so every few hours I'm looking at other cars/options just to make sure etc..

Built-in GPS is a bad idea for at least 2 reasons: the one I had in a car two cars ago had a button break. Would have cost $1100 to fix. vs portable one is like $100 nowadays.

Reason 2 is you can take a portable one with you when you travel and if you get a rental car, use your own GPS that you're already familiar with.

But I guess you're looking at a package with all three, huh? Tough, but I see the GPS as a negative/waste.

Yeah, a package.. so irritating.. I think I might just go with the standalone GPS. tomtom is great I hear, and a rearview camera.
