Bob Barr and Mike Gravel: Live! In Person! One Night Only!

A debate on the libertarian vote in 2008

As the Republicans settled on John McCain to carry their banner into the 2008 presidential election, three things happened. First Mike Gravel, the iconoclastic former senator from Alaska, left the Democratic race to fight for the Libertarian Party nod. Then, former Georgia Rep. Bob Barr, a Libertarian Party member since 2006, announced a bid for the party's presidential nomination. Finally, as the GOP's primaries wrapped up, Rep. Ron Paul notched a total of 1 million votes—just as his book The Revolution became a nationwide bestseller.

Paul has rebuffed multiple requests to run as a third party candidate, so what will happen to his supporters, donors, and voters? Why did Gravel and Barr join the Libertarian Party? Why do both of them want to see their former parties defeated at the ballot boxes? Should libertarians (note the small l) stay within the GOP ranks, as Paul has opted to do? Should they bolt for the Libertarians? The Democrats?

Joining Barr and Gravel will be:

- Wayne Allyn Root, a former Republican and self-described Goldwaterite who's also running hard for the Libertarian nomination.
- Vern McKinley, a "Ron Paul Republican" who's challenging incumbent Rep. Frank Wolf (R-Va.) for a House seat in northern Virginia.

Be part of a live reason.tv audience and watch Barr, Gravel, Root and McKinley debate these and related topics on Tuesday, May 20 at reason's DC HQ.Space is limited and RSVPs are mandatory.

Debate this afternoon: Barr, Gravel and Root (all LP presidential candidates) and Vern McKinley Ron Paul Republican running for Congress will all debate the libertarian (small "L") vote in 2008.

Why didn't Reason invite the other Libertarian candidates? Oh that's right it's been taken over by neocons.

I don't speak for Reason (though it is probably my fault that Vern got invited). I don't know, to answer your question.

Gravel, neocon? First time I've seen that.

Barr took Clinton to court (with Dr. Paul) to stop the illegal bombing without Congressional authorization (hardly makes him a neocon).

Vern is the farthest one from a neocon of the lot.

(no comment on Root)

I'm not referring so much to this specific event as to the general tone of the magazine in recent years. I guess it might be a stretch to equate "pro preemptive-war" with "neocon", but not by much. Regardless, this is hardly the group to discuss the future of libertarianism. I highly doubt Ruwart, Kubby, Philles, and the others all turned an invitation down.

oh, you meant the magazine. :o

Again, never worked there, didn't organize this, I have no idea. Sorry.

Vern McKinley Debates Others Because Frank Wolf Won’t

Ashburn, VA – Reason Magazine held a debate on Libertarian and Republican principles on May 20th. In attendance were Vern McKinley, Mike Gravel, Bob Barr, and Wayne Allen Root. Each of them answered a variety of questions from Reason Magazine’s reporter David Weigel and took questions from the audience.

McKinley talked about immigration, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, limiting the role of government, and drug policies. He said that he would have voted for a more targeted attack of Al-Qaeda in Afghanistan, but would oppose any type of nation building. As for Iraq, he would have voted “no” to go in.

Each of the candidates got to express their opinion on getting rid of a department and Vern chose Commerce, Energy, and Education. He said that Republicans talked about it in the 80s and 90s, but “this time around, we need to get serious and get rid of them all,” McKinley stated.

On the topic of drug prohibition, McKinley stated that the Constitution leaves that issue up to the states.

For those who weren’t there and would like to watch it online, can do so at http://www.reason.tv/video/show/431.html

McKinley is a financial expert who advises foreign countries, has worked for the FDIC, Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve, Treasury Department, and has done policy analysis for the Cato Institute and the American Enterprise Institute. He is running for the Republican nomination in the 10th District of Virginia for the House of Representatives. The primary is scheduled to be held on June 10, 2008.

Vern McKinley really looked good in that short video of the debate.

Peter james calls out Gravel

I was at the Reason debate and got to ask the Candidates about what they would do about the Federal Reserve. Bob Barr gave the only acceptable answer.

I meet Mike Gravel outside afterwards for a personal talk. I told him his position on the Fed was weak. He said that if I helped him be president he could fight them. I said that he needed to take the stand now, if he wanted me to support him.

Then he did something very interesting. He came up to me and said, that if he came out right now and annouced he would aboloish the Federal Reserve as President, that the same thing would happen to him that happend to Kennedy, Lincoln, et al.

I told him we didn't need to elect people who where more concerned about their personal safety than our Country.

My campaign manager witness this exchange and has been in the clouds over it for the last several days.

Doante today

In liberty,

Peter James
