Pentagon Gives U.S. Marine Corps the Job of Tracking Drug Boats

by The Maritime Executive
Oct 12, 2025

The Pentagon has ordered the creation of a new anti-smuggling Joint Task Force (JTF) within U.S. Southern Command. The new organization will be commanded by II Marine Expeditionary Force, and will perform a role similar to that of the Coast Guard-led Joint Interagency Task Force South (JIATF-S). The effect on JIATF-S' operations was not disclosed.

“Our team is trained, equipped, and ready to lead this Joint Task Force,” said Lt. Gen. Calvert Worth, Commanding General, II MEF and designated JTF Commander. “This is principally a maritime effort, and our team will leverage maritime patrols, aerial surveillance, precision interdictions, and intelligence sharing to counter illicit traffic, uphold the rule of law, and ultimately better protect vulnerable communities here at home.”

The new JTF's role will include airborne surveillance, drug shipment detection, intelligence fusion among U.S. and partner nation agencies, joint training, and advising and working with partner nations' counternarcotics units.

The Trump administration has recently begun using lethal strikes to destroy suspected smuggling boats in the Caribbean, despite certain internal concerns. II MEF has elements currently deployed in the Caribbean in support of counter-narcotics operations, and with the creation of the JTF, it now has drug boat tracking operations within its own command structure. Moving the tracking and interdiction mission under the Marine Corps could also suggest an intention to militarize the anti-cocaine operation off Latin America for the long term.

"Mom, can we have drug-trafficking boat interception?"

"No, we already have drug-trafficking boat interception at home."

Drug-trafficking boat interception at home: Coast Guard

And ironically, only 10-20% of US Coast Guard interdictions occur in US coastal waters, the remainder are on the high seas or some other nations' coastal waters.

What's the point of tracking them why not just blow them up

I think they are hunting the drug runner's "handlers" now too.

Marines can hit targets anywhere not just in drug boats in international waters.

Maybe we should just blow up all their boats, make it illegal for them to have boats

Problem solved

We like to have humans in the kill chain and target the drug lords specifically 😎

JTF Operation “Freedom Floats”

In a bold move to protect Americans from the scourge of personal choice and responsibility, the Pentagon has reassigned the Marine Corps - formerly tasked with storming beaches and defending liberty - to the noble art of drug boat babysitting. The new Joint Task Force, headquartered at Camp Lejeune, will operate under the guiding principle: If the boat floats and smells of freedom, then light it up (so punny these Marines).

Meanwhile, across the pond, the Royal Marines (still sure they have an empire - and feeling slighted for being excluded from the US activities in the Caribbean and South Pacific) have taken up similar duties in Oman, a country so close to the UK it shares absolutely no borders. There, British commandos recently executed a textbook “bullseye shot” on a skiff carrying £35 million in narcotics. The operation was hailed as a triumph of imperial nostalgia and precision optics.

Libertarians everywhere are thrilled. After all, what better use of taxpayer money than deploying elite warfighters to intercept floating contraband that might otherwise be peacefully consumed by consenting adults? It's a beautiful synergy: militarized prohibition meets globalist jurisdiction creep.

Rumor has it the next phase involves SEAL Team Six raiding vape shops in international waters. Stay tuned.

Don't look now, but something just went right over your chip.
Ill have to agree to disagree.

I have met plenty of people who have ruined their lives and only turned their life around because they got help from other people.

If it was a personal choice they wouldn't need help from other people get it?

We're gonna win this drug war eventually

Yeah we are winning because we haven't let the drugs kill our country.

If we lost the drug war we would collapse worse than China did from opiates.

They atleast had 5000 years of history which gave them enough of a national identity to reconstruct themselves.

It probably wouldn't have even happened if they weren't invaded by Japan and 50 million were killed and raped. Nothing forges a national identity like being invaded.

As it is now we are over run by foreign nationals and ideological foreigners.

Anything that fills the power vacuum in this country won't resemble the America that we know and love.

Bot. Define "self-contradictory".

MAGA didn't happen for no reason at all.

MAGA defeated the Democrat and Republican establishment because we had been ideologically invaded.

American historian H.W Brands has even argued that we have entered a "post partisan" era with no opportunity for opposition.

Look at the Soviet collapse as an example of political change that is happening in our country.

While there is resistance they don't have any power.
