H.R. 1207 Smoking Hot!
By Jesse Benton

I have some tremendous news to report: as of 3:00 pm ET today [Apr 23, 2009], H.R. 1207 has 88 cosponsors! That is 33 new cosponsors this week!!

And, there are even more to come.

I have been up on Capitol Hill all week meeting with congressional staff, and the reception has been unbelievable. In additional to those who got on today, I have received several additional commitments from members to cosponsor the bill in the coming days. And, I have five more appointments tomorrow. Between our Hill lobbying, the work of Dr. Paul’s congressional staff and the work of all of the tremendous grassroots activists in our movement, we are making progress unthinkable a few years ago.

We can win. We can pass H.R. 1207 this year, and finally audit the Federal Reserve. We still have a long way to go, and a lot of hard work to do, but if we stick together and work hard, we can do it.

I am so proud to be a part of this effort. Please keep it up, and thanks for all you do.

There is a big petition drive to get H.R. 1207 "Audit the Federal Reserve" enough co-sponsors to make it politically impossible to bury it in committee. If it gets out of committee it has an excellent chance of being passed because a vote against HR 1207 is a vote against transparency and openness in government. Those who vote against it would be putting themselves at risk politically. The signed petitions are to be delivered to Congressional offices around the United States on Tuesday, April 28.

We already have over 20% of the House on board. We can do this!

Contact your local Campaign for Liberty Regional Coordinator and ask how you can help gather signatures and get them to your local Congressional offices on Tuesday!

We can do this. We must do this!

Please post links to downloadable petitions in this thread. C4L should be distributing one within the next 24 hours. The petition already on the site is okay but it's just for one signature per sheet. It's nice to have customized petitions with your Representative's name on it; hopefully someone will make one of those soon.

Multi-line petitions

I threw together this multi-signature petition for anyone who wants to use it, based on the one-sig-per-page petition Deb Wells just emailed out:

Any changes?

Quick facts about the Fed and HR 1207:

  • The Federal Reserve enjoys a monopoly over the flow of our money and credit but has never been fully transparent and accountable to Congress since its creation in 1913.
  • Since 1913, our dollar has lost more than 95% of its purchasing power.
  • In addition to an over $11 trillion national debt (each American's share is more than $36,000), Congress, the Treasury, and the Federal Reserve have put us on the hook for almost $10 trillion in bailouts and loans.
  • Yet, the Fed refuses to tell Congress which institutions have received these funds.
  • On February 26, 2009, Congressman Ron Paul introduced HR 1207, the Federal Reserve Transparency Act, which would deliver answers to the American people about how our money is being used.
  • HR 1207, which is currently in the House Financial Services Committee, has 88 co-sponsors within two months of its introduction.
  • HR 1207 amends section 714 of Title 31 of the U.S. Code to remove the restrictions on how the Government Accountability Office (GAO) can audit the Federal Reserve.
  • With these limitations gone, the Fed's discount window operations, funding facilities, open market operations, and agreements with foreign central banks and governments would all finally be open to congressional oversight.
  • The GAO would be required to audit the Fed by the end of 2010 and to report its findings to Congress.

I just updated the petitions with line numbers and changed the "Comments" field to "City, State" and made the front and back the same. 10 signatures per page for easy counting.

Went to the park for my lunch hour and got 25 signatures and two Hell Yeahs!

91 is freaking awesome! I will be pushing Congresswoman Cathy Castor D-FL D.11 on Tuesday. She has gotten at least 7 calls to her local and DC office as well as emails. I have recruited some friends for a petition drive this weekend.

Lets do this people!

Busy parks and public college campuses are way quicker than door to door. Plus, you're not interrupting people in their homes, they're already in a good mood, and you're on neutral ground.

"Hi, would you be interested in signing a petition to audit the Federal Reserve Bank? They're the ones that manage all the bailout money and they refuse to tell us who they're giving the money to or how much. It's just not right for them to be passing out all of those trillions of dollars and we can't even find out who's getting the money. ... There are already 91 co-sponsors for this bill and we're asking _[Rep. Name]__ to sign on on as well so that the whole thing is more open and transparent."
