Updated: HP Touchpad Firesale: One Last Run From $500 to $99

Went to three different best buys, and was determined to not come home empty handed. After 4 hours, a shipment came in and I was third in line. Got a 32GB - only allowing one TP per customer. Like it so far :)

Dannno, very good chance your order WILL be processed - my mom called up zones for her order (stated ”in process” - while mine was cancelled and she ordered after me) and they told her if it's not cancelled by now, there's a good chance she'll get it. I would call up their customer service :)

Congratulations!!!! My hubby in on the road today. I just called and told him to stop by the Best Buys. He's in sparsely populated rural Michigan, so it's possible ....

In all seriousness, picking one up IN HAND is probably the best way to go - rumor is BB's will be getting more shipments in for the weekend.

Like I said, try to ask a manager. Or talk to an employee and become friendly - me and two others did this, and he came right over to us and told us that the shipment is arriving soon, and then came over again when the truck was actually outside and the employees were unloading it. Then again - we were there since 9AM (truck came in at 12:30PM).

Good time to go is early morning (be there 45min to an HR ahead of time), afternoon, or before closing (around 9 or 9:30). :)

Don't trust that website. Said my local BB had them in stock, raced over there while on the phone waiting for an answer the whole way. They had sold out 2 hours prior to a line of 80+ people waiting on the shipment.

I really want one of these all of the sudden. I hope I can get one tomorrow or Saturday. The nice lady at BestBuy told me they're going to get some Saturday morning, so I'm going to try then.

Anyone else have any luck?

If you're waiting for HP to get their stock and to buy through HP, I suggest making a twitter account (separate from your own personal account if you have one) and following Bryna@HP (warning: she is extremely annoying and #hashtags #everything #she #says but recently her updates have been great) and Mark@HP.

Check out the SlickDeals Touchpad thread - people there have been very helpful (remember to hit 'Last' to get to the very last page of updates). Also, this Wiki from SD is awesome to check out.

Refunds/Credits for Overselling

If you ordered from B&N... you should be getting a $20 giftcard on behalf on B&N. Make sure you claim it.
If you ordered from OnSale (through Amazon)... Amazon has been giving anywhere from $10-30 credits - talk to support.

If worse comes to worse, you can always do what this kid's doing... I know, amazing. :D

Try to be there an hour before opening (if you go on Saturday), unless you get a head's up what time they will come in. :) Good luck!

Impressions of the HP Touchpad:

I honestly really like it - sure, it's no iPad, but I never expected it to be. WebOS is pretty nice, and the tablet runs fast after you do some quick changes of the system settings. I have not overclocked it yet (the equivalent of jailbreaking an Apple product), but plan to tomorrow.

I don't quite understand all the commotion about the applications - honestly, everything (I feel) you could need there's an app for - around 4,000 total. They run fast. And HP is running a nice little promotion for 5 free apps right now (including an app that lets you use the built-in camera to take pictures [yeah, HP WebOS had it so that the cam can only be activated during videochats], and an Audabon app worth $14.99 that has an awesome collection of bird pictures and bird sounds).

Really can't complain :)

Hmm... did b&n send you an email about the $20 gift card? All i got was a free survey in which BN did not score very well! :p

That's why I said to follow it overnight, check it out before they open in the morning then go.... and maybe stand in line.... I did the same thing and they said 2 hours ago too, and I cruised over within a half-hour of it showing on their site.

Dannno.... same here with Zones.com, this is the best I could find.....

Zones.com
-08/24/11 Spoke with CSR Kevin during my first call. Apparantly, they received 4500 orders for 1000 units. They have not shipped any out. They are currently going through the order and canceling all orders with multiple units ordered. That in addition to people who have been canceling they feel they will be able to finally release the 1000 units to ship by tomorrow. He said call back this afternoon as more information will be available and they may be receiving more stock from HP depending on their final order amount.

I got in line at Best Buy at 7:20 or so. Already a ton there. They handed out the vouchers at 9am. I was about 10 away.:\ Oh well, I'm sincerely hoping HP puts them up on Monday, they should from what I hear.

I'm really starting to get excited about getting one now that I saw someone running Windows 8 on it. I've been waiting for a device about this size that can run a regular, desktop PC OS for at least 4 years now. This could be that device. That's what I was hoping the iPad would be.. but no luck.

Interestingly, internal memos have recently been published from HP. They'll be keeping webOS and continuing development but selling their hardware division off. I don't quite understand why they'd do that, unless they believe this massive sale of webOS devices will spur on a great deal of development like specs suggested, making webOS a sound option for hardware developers to use with their tablets. But at that point, wouldn't manufacturing webOS devices be more profitable?
