Unions Kill The Twinkie

Nothing like a steaming pile of class warfare for breakfast, eh?

.................... The raise he gave himself was 1.8M, ...........................

which apparently based on his track record he was not even worth 1% of, eh.

yeah well it certainly would appear that Management was around 90% of the Problem

Pension burdens: Mufson notes that the company had 372 collective bargaining agreements with a dozen unions and had roughly $2 billion in unfunded pension liabilities to its various unions' workers, but it brought in a disappointing $2.5 billion in revenue in 2011.

Labor rules: Kaplan noted how that Hostess had ludicrous work rules based on labor contracts—including the requirement of separate drivers for deliveries of such goodies as Yankee Doodles and Nature's Pride Nutty Oat—which exacerbated their huge problem of high labor costs.

Crippling debt: Kaplan detailed how over the years labor unions had successfully negotiated generous pensions and health care benefits that increasingly ignored shifts in the marketplace. So once sales began to decline in the 1980s and '90s as consumers found healthier alternatives to snack cakes and white bread, debt started piling up to the tune of about $450 million by the first bankruptcy in 2004.

In 2009, after five years of restructuring, the company's total debt load was nearly $670 million despite winning concessions from the unions and new capital from investors as it became a private entity.

And by the time the company filed bankruptcy in January, the company had lost $250 million in the less than three years.

Stale products: A source told Mufson that even the most popular food brands need reinvention every eight years or so, but the company has been riding on the success of the Twinkie since its inception in 1933. Attempts to re-energize—such as bringing back the original banana-cream Twinkies and publishing "The Twinkies Cookbook"—flopped.

as a once hardworking union member in Bakers Local 9 now retired, i take personal offense at this and demand an apology.

Wow I backtracked through so many pages to find what must have been a terrible insult by a mod against a member, and I find that?

It's not even CaseyJones telling you that. He linked to RonPaulProblems. Please direct your demand for an apology to the owners of that site?

He should apologize for posting a third-party website that most people find humor in, and offending you, because you were a union member (he was supposed to know that, too). Right.

As a subsidiary of Bimbo?

BIMBO! i mean BINGO!

Whoever owns the brands and the recipes will reopen in 18 months with plants full of non-union, hard-working hombres making $10 bucks an hour - and they will be happy for the job. Not saying it's right - just saying.

Twinkies will rise again, so to speak.

They're probably sell it to Kraft or whoever. I doubt any new company will be reopening.

what frightens me about your post is the fact you can't put 2 plus 2 together. Yes, he put up a link titled ''unions destroy america''...apparently...according to YOU Casey Jones doesn't believe that, or he did it to stir the pot for his amusement. Which is it?

And yes, he knows i'm a Union worker for Bakers Local 9. I made it pretty clear in my previous posts prior to his FLAME. Either that or he's like you and can't figure things out....which is it?

This 'debate' about private Unions really astounds me. Other than myself, i'm the only one who has worked for Interstate Brands, been a foreman/supervisor, shop steward, attended negotiations, basically seen it all, and not one of you has a clue other than what you can find on the internet. Well, the internet is fine and dandy, but there is NO WAY any of you know the entire story. Only the International Bakers leadership knows. Local biz reps know the real story....in fact i don't know the entire story...yet, but i'm a hell of a lot closer to it than most of you.

Oh look. Now THOSE are insults against forum members.

Also, it's interesting you assume you are the only person on the forums who's had to work for a union. You have a weird need to make yourself special in that regard. You also have a weird notion that none of us, even when we haven't been directly working for a union shop, have been affected by unions.

Oh well. Why care about facts when you can stomp around demanding an apology for 20 pages?

Actually, I should have guessed you were a union member based on that, eh? :D

PS - Thank you for the laugh tonight:

NO, thankyou for showing your true colors.

I was thinking about this today. I went to the store to buy some Twinkees (before they are no more) so I could give them to my Obama supporting friends with a note attached that says something to the effect of "Thanks to union shortsightedness, you will never be able to buy these again". Or perhaps just give it to them with a DVD of Ron Paul's last speech. Alas....I went to Kroger and there were no Twinkies. (Nothing but Little Debbies at that store). If anyone knows where I can still buy Twinkies in Nashville TN let me know. I think this is a great idea for a protest, but we only have a short time window to do it.

Go in early in the morning after they have restocked from the previous night. Grocery stores, Target, Walmart, etc. Amazon is also selling them and you can probably find them on E-Bay.

Black Market Twinkies being smuggled over State lines..... News at 11.

I can imagine the Twinkie landed in front of the deer, the deer ate it, got a massive sugar buzz, then ran into traffic.
