Ugh, The Department of Education comments...

This ABSOLUTELY hurts him.. Most people only hear something along the lines of ... "... get rid of education" .. He SERIOUSLY needs to figure out a way to change the way he talks about this. My sister is a teacher, and her interpretation of what he is saying is that it is something that directly impacts her negatively. It doesn't matter that people should know what he means, MOST do NOT.

I wish he would of said, "why we now think that Washington bureaucrats know how to teach our children better than parents, teachers and local school administrators, when we used to be so against it is as wrong as it is expensive."

Congressman Paul could learn a lot from Frank Luntz.

That's sad, but that's how America works.

Aren't these comments really going to hurt Ron? Why does he keep mentioning it - most people can not understand his comments and lose respect for him as a result. Am I wrong?

Can someone explain to me what Ron believes education should be like or give me a link? I honestly could not find any relevant info on Google.

it is on www.ronpaul2008.com go to issues, education, and also see homeschooling

It's an important part of his platform. He's not against education, he's against the federal government directing it and wants the power to be left in the hands of the states.

So why the heck doesnt he say as much.. why doesnt he say to the parents.. look, its alot easier to keep the schools on check if they all have to answer to their district's populis...

But good luck getting any change done when everything is decided on the national/federal level

I told my grandparents that he wants to get rid of the department of education and they flipped out saying that he wanted everyone to take away everyones right to an aducation.

My main point was that most people will misinterpret his comment about the Department of Education. Really, I would think that most people would say - "Oh this guy's against education - he's such a radical. Such a nut." Really - I think most people (or just the sheople, I guess) do look at him and think that he is a nut and comments like this just detract from his message (even though they shouldn't).

I love Ron and have donated a fairly significant amount of money considering my position so I'm not trying to cut him down. Just trying to get my point across.

As for my question about his policy, I realize he wants to deregulate federal control of the education system in our country, but, like many of his other policies, he completely believes the states should decide what to do?

All that said, I'm sorry for starting this thread. It probably wasn't necessary considering how many times this issue has been discussed.

I'm pretty sick of hearing him mentioning getting rid of the Dept. of Education as well. That is the issue that is turning off alot of potential voters! I lost a friend's support due to that issue and it happens to be the only part of his platform I cannot agree with. If this talk is not helping us right now with the Republicans, it is going to KILL US once he goes head on against the Democrats.

NONE OF THE CANDIDATES ARE TALKING ABOUT SCHOOL VOUCHERS! Ron Paul needs to adopt this position! Everyone needs an education in order to be self-sustaining, so why not give each individual the option of either staying in public school or using a tax voucher toward his or her private school of choice.

You heard him tonight compromise on the issue of Social Security by keeping it intact for the older generation. So don't give me that bullshit about sticking to a Libertarian platform.

really, he needs to have people who are alert working with him on presentation of his issues.
average people should hear a thorough explanation, sometimes with anecdotes, stories, to help explain.

something is missing at headquarters, maybe.

YES I have offered to help with that to HQ, as I'm sure many of you have, but heard nothing.

It's like your favorite football team... you know which players are good and which ones suck, but the owner of the football just thinks that you are a dumb fan

I agree with his position but I think he should use other examples as this one often misunderstood.

Getting rid of the Department of Education IS NOT THE SAME AS GETTING RID OF PUBLIC SCHOOLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Education is simply not a right protected by the Constitution and is not a place for involvement of the feds in our personal lives.

If given the choice 50 out of 50 states would run their own education programs.
Voters would get the right to elect people to their local boards of education who were actually qualified for the job.
Raising revenues locally through taxation at the state, county, and city level would increase oversight and spending accountability.
Parents would be more involved with their school boards and teachers. Teachers would have more leverage in petitioning their local governments for higher wages.
All getting rid of the department of Education does is slash the 40% of education spending overhead which goes to bureaucrats. The Department of Education dictates policy for public schools but the DOE has never actually "EDUCATED" anybody.
Right now only 60% of the money we pay makes it back to our schools. I think it should be 100%. Public schools are fine but the feds should not be involved. If one state has a system that is better than the system in another state, then the states will begin to compete and adopt the best possible practices under pressure to perform from the voters. Costs will go down and quality will go up.

Ah, Reagan got elected on that.

Correct but with a caveat...when Reagan talked about abolishing the Fed. Dept. of Ed., folks still remembered that it had just been created by Jimmy Carter in exchange for the backing of the NEA and the teachers union during his campaign. :(

Well, I sent a suggestion to the campaign. Perhaps if we continue doing that, things may change.

It's worth trying IMO.
