The gunman – named in some reports as 27-year-old American Michael McLendon – carried out the massacre in five separate shooting incidents.
He fired at homes, a petrol station, shops and vehicles in Samson and Geneva near the Florida border.
According to the BBC, five people - including a youngster - were killed in one house alone. Several of the victims are believed to have been members of the gunman's family.
McLendon first set fire to his mother’s house. Police later discovered the corpse of a woman in the remains of the building, but couldn’t confirm whether she had been shot or not.
The gunman then drove into the centre of nearby Samson and killed his grandparents, whom had raised him as a boy, as well as an aunt and uncle.
But then he met two complete strangers – a woman who had just left a petrol station shop and a person in a hardware store were both shot by McLendon in cold blood.
Shockingly, the gunman is also said to have murdered the wife and child of a police deputy.
Local coroner Robert Preachers said: “We don’t know what triggered [the massacre].”
State Senator Harri Anne Smith was stunned: “He was just driving down the street shooting at people. A family was just sitting on the porch and they were shot.”
As he made his escape, McLendon reportedly fired at a police car and rammed it several times.
An officer was injured by shards of broken glass as police pursued the gunman into neighbouring Geneva.
He then went into Reliable Metal Products where he used to work, and 'USA Today' reported that he fired an estimated 30 rounds from a semi-automatic weapon.
One of the bullets hit Geneva Police Chief Frankie Lindsey, who was saved by his bullet proof vest.
McLendon then went inside the plant and shot himself, according to the Alabama safety department.
The motive behind the tragedy remains unclear, as police expect the death toll to rise.
