Turnout sparse as Virginians cast GOP primary ballots

dont we want a high turnout so maybe newt and santorum supporters get to the ballot and realize therse only Ron and Romney. If they weren't for Romney from the start, they wont be for Romney now.

Only option is to vote for Ron or they dont know the rules and try to write in Santorum or Gingrich

I love that the above replies criticized this post for having 'Other' on the ballot, and not for it showing a cumulative total of 110%. xD

You'd think that the least we could expect from dedicated Ron Paul supporters was 110% effort!

Let's hope the polls are wrong, and that when people actually see the ballot, they think about it for two seconds and actually make a wise decision.

First, let me say the chance of RP winning VA is very, very remote. However, if I'm a supporter of Santorum or Gingrich who doesn't like Romney and think Paul is a loon. I still might be inclined to vote for Paul with the assumption that I can 1) make a point that Romney isn't "this conservative's choice" and 2) Paul is harmless to vote for because he has no chance of winning.

Anyway, I can imagine RP could outperform his polling a little bit when there are no other options on the ballot.

Unfortunately for Virginia, unless we beat Romney head to head we get 0 delegates. Anything less than 50% we get nothing AFAIK.

Its 50% per congressional district. Each district awards 3 delegates to the candidate that wins that district. I could us taking most of the delegates and losing the popular vote. N.VA will go to Romney - Paul has a good chance in the rest of the state.

Wrong.

The delegates are chosen via conventions being held between now and May. Pre-filing is required in many Counties, so make sure you don't miss the deadlines - watch rpv.org and click on "calls" in the top right corner to see a list of which counties have been called.

The delegates are bound the first round.

But an important point is that the 11 congressional delegates get 3 delegates each for the winner of that district.

If we GOTV we can do well. Grab your neighbors, grab anyone. People on the college campuses should be throwing parties for voters (you need an I Voted sticker or whatever they give out to attend), that really encourages people to vote.

Grab your kids.... Grab your wife... Grab your husbands too.........

Super low turnout at my voting place....I thought I was at the wrong place it was so low. Good thing the voting desk was right in front of the school door!!

What county are you in? Has your convention taken place where you voted on delegates yet?

So how many in your group showed up with you?

We very well might win CD-5, 6, and 9; and could win CD-3, 4, and maybe 2. The winner of each individual CD gets 3 delegates per CD. the winner take all is for the 13 At Large delegates only.

Paul could get 9 or more delegates our of VA, which would be all gravy (in that not Newt nor Ricky can get any VA delegates) if your short term goal is catching Santorum for the Anti-Romney spot.

All polling indicates winning is virtually impossible in VA. So dont get your hopes up, but wouldnt that be something if we did...

Another interesting article:

At a precinct less than two miles from Gingrich’s McLean home, the election went largely unnoticed. Only 30 of the precinct’s more than 3,000 voters had cast ballots by 10 a.m. A few miles away in Falls Church, voter Darren Ewing was frustrated that Virginia’s election laws did not allow him to write in Gingrich’s name, so he reluctantly voted for Paul.

Gingrich “may not be the most polished candidate, but he’s a candidate with a vision” and a track record of implementing significant changes, said Ewing, 41, a financial adviser.

Stories starting to roll in about the extremely low-turnout, also Gingrich supporters urged to vote Paul in VA:

- Reports of low voter turnout from this morning, writes Democratic strategist Ben Tribbett, mean only the diehards are voting. Ron Paul supporters are all diehards. (Counterpoint: The polls are open until 7 p.m.!)

- Supporters of Newt and Santorum may try to sabotage Romney by ginning up support for Paul. Take this plea from a Newt Gingrich forum, posted last month: "… If you are a true Newt supporter, the best you can do is vote for Ron Paul and keep Romney from winning more delegates. This IS the way you should vote in order to send a message to your Governor & the rest of the establishment GOP supporting Willard Romney. Don't get mad—get even." (Counterpoint: One message board rant does not an electoral strategy make.
