Well Gingrich is part of his team, Trump said it, since he hasn't disavowed it or fired Gingrich.. Trump pays Gingrich to say these types of things, and he doesn't like paying people who do a bad job.

That's the joke, if Newt was going around lying about Trump he should be fired, if Trump wanted to send any message that he was going to drain the swamp he would fire Newt. Newt Gingrich is part of the swamp, that's why him saying this resonates so much.
