Trump Real ID Act Gives DHS Blank Check to Expand When "Real ID" is Needed, Set "Standards" for Validity Such as Vaccine Compliance
As the Trump TSA again raises the penalty for Americans declining to submit their personal information to the French company IDEMIA, which is the private third-party contractor to the DHS which makes, owns, and manages “Read ID,” many argue that “Real ID’ is not an ID at all, but an AI surveillance network.
The TSA has announced that now a $45 fee and a biometric facial scan will be the additional cost of trying to board a domestic flight for US citizens. Facial scans will become part of Real ID anyway.
The Real ID Act was passed in 2005, but has lain fallow as a result of state and popular resistance. Since taking office for his second term, Trump has single-handedly resurrected it and put it into overdrive.
IDEMIA has been accused by human rights organizations of helping the Egyptian military government in its crackdown on dissent, through its mass surveillance and tracking technology.
The difference between “Real ID” and any other US government identifier, most prominently a Social Security number, is enormous but poorly understood.
For starters, all Social Security information is stored in a massive US data warehouse in Urbana, MD, owned and run by the US government. In contrast, Real ID data is in the hands of a foreign contractor, IDEMIA, which is out of reach of the US Civil Service. All US Civil Service employees are required to take an oath to uphold and defend the US Constitution.

IDEMIA contracts to other private companies for the storage needs of massive amounts of data, which are only expected to grow, primary among them Amazon Web Services, which runs the biggest “cloud” storage network in the world. The ultimate loyalty of employees running the home to the most intimate details of one’s life is not to any Constitution, but to Jeff Bezos.
Even more important than these differences in legal ownership structure, are the authorities granted to the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, appointed by the president, in the 2005 Real ID Act.
Whether the granting of these authorities to DHS, or indeed any agency of the Executive Branch, is Constitutional in the first place is a subject of hot dispute. Attorney Joseph Scott St. John of New Orleans writes: “The REAL ID Act is a novel and extraordinary affront to the Tenth Amendment.”
The Tenth Amendment affirms the premise that the Constitution is a limiting document, limiting the federal government to only the powers enumerated, with all other powers reserved to the states and the People.
The Real ID Act of 2005, an outgrowth of the Patriot Act and the rafter of legislation which ostensibly addressed the attacks of 9/11, grants the DHS Secretary unilateral, unquestioned authority to determine what the Real ID will be needed for in the future, and what “standards” will make it valid.
Nowhere in the US Constitution is the government given the authority require the presentation of identification of any sort for daily civilian activities. The Fourth Amendment requires law enforcement to provide “probable cause” of a crime having been committed or in progress to demand identification from citizens. Wherever possible, a search warrant must be obtained.
The Real ID will be required, according to the TSA in a January 14, 2025 rules document for (1) accessing Federal facilities, (2) boarding federally regulated commercial aircraft, (3) entering nuclear power plants.
Although it is already questionable why a weapons search would not be sufficient to ensure safety for these locations, as US Representative Thomas Massie has noted, the Trump administration TSA goes yet further, declaring that a Real ID shall also be needed for “any other purposes that the Secretary of Homeland Security shall determine.”
This is a broad, sweeping hammer unprecedented in American history, which codifies, in America, Nazi Germany’s “papers please.” The DHS Secretary could determine that a valid Real ID must be scanned for entry into any public place, and many private ones. As the law is written, the sky is the limit on when the government can demand Real ID.

A “standard” is not limited and could be anything, including whether or not a high resolution facial recognition scan has been obtained from the Real ID holder, or vaccination status.
Former Bush Jr. administration official and Real ID critic, Assistant Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Catherine Austin Fitts, remains convinced that the Real ID will be used to enforce vaccine mandates, by making it impossible to function in society without a valid Real ID, which could require government-mandated injections as a standard for validity, in essence a de-facto vaccine passport.

The same January 14, 2025 TSA rules document, issued by supposed servants of the people, suddenly takes a decidedly threatening tone, and promises unnamed “consequences” lest the people who pay its salaries refuse to accept the generous convenience. The Trump TSA diktat reads:
“After May 7, 2025, when agencies begin full enforcement or implement a phased enforcement plan, as appropriate, the public will be further incentivized to obtain a REAL ID as they realize and anticipate consequences for presenting a non-compliant DL/ID.”

Real ID is anticipated by many to eventually take the form of an under-the-skin biochip for everyone, already a reality in countries such as Sweden.
Refuse Real ID is one of the main groups opposing Real ID, which some call “the Mark of the Beast,” with the campaign “Stop Real ID”
Ironically, some among the financial elites makes no secret of its desire for a China-like global system which “monitors” and “tracks” people. Klaus Schwab, founder of the World Economic Forum, wrote in his book in 2019, The Fourth Industrial Revolution:
“Any package, pallet or container can now be equipped with a sensor, transmitter or radio frequency identification (RFID) tag that allows a company to track where it is as it moves through the supply chain—how it is performing, how it is being used, and so on….In the near future, similar monitoring systems will also be applied to the movement and tracking of people.”
In the UK mass protests have arisen against the British equivalent of the Real ID, the BritCard. The UK government has declared, in a mandate that is entirely within the scope of the Real ID Act as it is written, that UK citizens must possess a BritCard in order to work or travel within the UK, the country of their birth.
