I can only speak for myself here but I never changed any of my positions regarding either immigration or gun control on account of Donald Trump doing anything, though I will admit to using mocking language at certain individuals trolling for Trump here that may have been misconstrued as me supporting open-borders, but I am not a fan of the notion of simply allowing tons of people, be they Mexican, Arab, or anywhere else to simply flood in here and gaming this country's welfare entitlement system and altering our electoral politics.
My chief contention here has always been that Trump is an unabashed liar and a cynical opportunist, and that the people who are moving over to his camp are suckers or, like in the case of the recently departed "Conservative Warrior", so driven mad by their desire to stick it to the establishment that they've become useful idiots thereof. A lot of this support for Trump is coming from overly radicalized paleo-cons (a contradiction in terms actually, since paleo-conservatism is defined as the opposite of being either radical or revolutionary, but fanaticism thwarts the laws of logic) or some other strain of fanatic who strains at the gnat of Rand Paul voting on one or two bills while swallowing the massive camel that is Trump's positions on dealing with the families of suspected terrorists and unleashing the nuclear arsenal simply because we have it. I was tearing into people who were thinking this way back in 2012 when they started blowing a gasket over Rand endorsing Mitt Romney, precisely because I figured it would lead to something like this, and evidently both Trump and Cruz were also paying attention to it and lapped up some of these poor dopes.
But just to put this in perspective, I'll list my positions on these matters:
1. There is one valid form of gun control, and it's called marksmanship training. Frankly, I think everybody in the country should be required to own at least one or two guns and should have mandatory gun safety and marksmanship classes before getting a high school diploma. This would put this entire pointless debate on gun control to an end, and would also make life a lot easier for the police.
2. The border needs to be secured, anybody who came to this country without legal documentation should not be subject to immediate amnesty, nor should they be given access to welfare money. I'm not of a mind to deny these people emergency medical care or something else of immediate necessity, but just as we are not the world's policemen, we are also not the world's homeless shelter or orphanage.
Any questions?
P.S. - I'm not sure that Rubio is worse than Trump, I have yet to hear Rubio publicly say he's going to have the families of terrorists killed (regardless of whether they were involved or not) nor have I heard one of Rubio's advisers muse over using nuclear weapons simply because we have them. He may not be better than Trump, but on the exterior, Rubio definitely sounds less crazy.
