Because if he released them himself they would accuse him of having doctored them to use against his political enemies.
Now they have thrown him into the briar patch and he can say he wasn't going to do it, but they forced him to.

1. I don't understand how this would preempt them from saying he doctored them to use against his political enemies.

2. If it's a win for Party A when members of Party B claim the files were doctored for use against them by Party A, then why would Trump himself say they were doctored by the Democrats to use against himself? You're saying the whole point of his charade is to bait them into doing the very thing that he himself has already done in the process of baiting them.

3. What's so wrong with just being honest, forthright, and matter-of-fact about this, rather acting like something false is true in order to trick one's opponents? Wouldn't you rather have a president who doesn't engage in things like that?

1 they may try to claim that, but it will ring hollow when he tried not to release them and they forced the release.

2 Trump is taking their line away from them by saying it first.

3 I would just do it directly, Trump is playing politics with it in ways he thinks will be more effective at the risk of alienating his supporters.
 
So from what I understand this latest thing is that Trump sent Epstein a a naked lady doodle in the 90's?

Why is Trump so scared of that coming out? It's not the huge scandal. Everyone knows how Trump treated women, this is not anything new. There has to be more to it.

Pranksters filled Trump Tower’s gift shop with merchandise featuring pictures of the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein with the president.

The Good Liars, a political comedy duo of Jason Selvig and Davram Stiefler, posted photos of postcards with an old photograph of Donald Trump and Epstein they say were among the souvenirs at the president’s Manhattan skyscraper.

The duo confirmed to The Independent they were responsible for the prank. The Independent reached out to the Trump Tower store and a representative declined to confirm the incident or comment further.

A similar prank was recently carried out in London when activists put the same old photo of Trump and Epstein on a bus shelter near the U.S. embassy ahead of the president’s state visit to the United Kingdom in September, according to an Instagram post from the group Everyone Hates Elon.
