Tom Harkin (D- Iowa Senate) to Retire

Does he live in Latham or King's congressional district? If he does, he should run for their congressional seat if one of them runs instead of running for senate.

He lives in Tom Latham's district. Latham is more likely to run for US senate than King. Just my opinion.

I'm hearing lots of chatter, and although I can't say from who, but it is more likely than not that one of the following individuals will run for US Senate given Tom Harkin's retirement -

Drew Ivers
AJ Spiker
David Fischer
Kent Sorenson

Save up your money, 2014 and 2016 are going to be expensive but fruitful years for the liberty movement! Remember, you heard it here first

I have my hunch. Maybe I'll give him a call. Haven't talked to him in awhile.

I think Sorenson may try for Latham's seat if he jumps in.

Drew Ivers is friends with Iowa Committeeman Steve Scheffler, president of Iowa Faith & Freedom Coalition. Scheffler is working with Morton Blackwell to overturn the rules rammed down at the national convention.

I just realized I have 1/3 of all posts in this thread.... I guess I'm interested in the topic...

I think Sorenson would have the most cred.

To win as a Republican statewide in Iowa is not easy.

It maybe a good thing that it's not an office holder or someone who is an 'outsider' like Sorenson

I'm not sure if the congress people would give up their seat for the chance of becoming Senator because they know how difficult it can be to win the race and has some risk.

Tom Latham isn't running.

Dear Friend:

I want to thank you for your continued and faithful friendship and support. I also want to thank you and the many Iowans who have reached out to me with their support and encouragement to enter the race for Iowa’s open U.S. Senate seat in 2014. I cannot tell you how much I appreciated the calls, conversations, emails and notes. I feel truly blessed and humbled to represent in Congress the greatest state and people.

My service to Iowa has never been motivated by titles, accolades or a drive to secure a place for my name in history or on a building. I have always been motivated by a responsibility and commitment to the people of Iowa, who elected me to faithfully work for an America that provides greater freedom and more opportunity for our children and grandchildren.

The opportunity to serve Iowa in the U.S. Senate is appealing to this farm kid who grew up here, raised a family here, and helped grow a family business in Iowa. I love Iowa.

However, only 56 days ago I took an oath to “faithfully discharge the duties” of an office with which the people of Iowa’s Third Congressional District entrusted to me. I cannot in good conscience launch a two-year statewide campaign that will detract from the commitment I made to the people who elected me, at a time when our nation desperately needs less campaigning and more leadership.

Again, thank you for your continued friendship. I ask for your continued support and guidance as we work together for this great nation and her people.

Best -
Tom

If King runs, we won't win in the primaries. He is very popular with FreedomWorks and the Club for Growth, who generally provide a lot of the funding for liberty Senate races. The Senate Conservatives Fund will most likely back him too. He's also good friends with Amash and Massie, so they aren't likely to endorse in that race.

Hopefully he stays out - if he doesn't, leave the Senate race and have someone run for his House seat. I think Spiker is in a very good position right now for Rand 2016 and I don't think he should run yet, but if one of these state legislators is up for it, it could work out well.

If Steve King does not run then we have a better chance at taking the GOP nomination.

Well, if our guys in IA can win this seat--whether with a Ron Paul Republican nominee or not--they will take a lot of pressure off their backs.

It doesn't sound like we have a good statewide candidate out there. That means we need to win the congressional/legislature seats that open up as a result of this race.

Steve Deace, the talk radio host who has written on Joe Miller's website, is considering running if no satisfying conservative candidate steps up.

Conservative talk show host Steve Deace says he would consider a bid for U.S. Senate in Iowa if Republican Rep. Steve King does not enter the race.
"I have been approached by people across Iowa to consider this race," he told Fox News. "I have been approached by people outside of Iowa to consider this race. The best path to victory (in the 2014 Senate contest) is for an established conservative like Steve King to run for the Senate."
He said the party needs someone who can "unite the Rand Paul faction and the Mike Huckabee faction of the grassroots activists."
