Looks like we have another one. Hopefully we can field a good candidate in this race, we already control the state apparatus.

This is a good chance for our people in Iowa to prove themselves as good citizens to all the naysayers. The national GOP will now be counting on this seat to take back the Senate and it is a good test for our fundraising, candidate support, etc.

Just found out. Was gonna post. This is great news! One bad thing... there is no one lined up to replace him. Bruce Braley(IA-1) has been rumored to be eying the governorship but now a US senate seat has opened up for him...

How are Senate nominees chosen in Iowa? Primary or convention?

Primary. Lt. Governor is the only position that is chosen at convention in the state of Iowa.

I know we have a big stake in the party leadership but I wasn't aware that we had much in terms of legislators that could move on to higher office. I'd love to know otherwise because this is another great opportunity. It really is a shame when a seat like this opens up and we aren't positioned to run someone of our ilk but I suppose we can't win them all. The article mentioned the likes of Reps King or Latham as potential republican contenders and that excites about as much as a turd in a punch bowl.

Do you guys think Terry Branstad will run for the Senate seat?

He could win if he did. I'm not sure of his political ambitions. I know he is 'grooming' Lt. Governor Kim Reynolds to be his successor. In an unprecedented move she has opened her own campaign account. No Lt. Governor has ever done this in Iowa. I'm not sure if he will seek one more term or not.

I found this list of Iowans who endorsed Ron Paul:

Kent Sorenson, Iowa State Senator
Glen Massie, Iowa State Representative
Kim Pearson, Iowa State Representative
Jason Schultz, Iowa State Representative

Massie and Pearson only served one term. They did not seek reelection.

Pearson at State Convention. Camera settles about 1 minute in.

Other potential GOP candidates who might seriously consider running include former Iowa GOP Chairman Matt Strawn, Iowa State Sen. Brad Zaun, Secretary of State Matt Schultz, social conservative activist Bob Vander Plaats, Republican Party of Iowa co-chair David Fischer and state GOP finance chairman Drew Ivers (a co-chair of Ron Paul’s 2012 campaign in Iowa).

Agriculture Secretary Bill Northey could get in, but he’s seen as having a better shot at running for governor in 2018.

There’s also some buzz about state Rep. Pat Grassley, the 29-year-old grandson of longtime incumbent Republican Sen. Chuck Grassley. But he could also run for one of the vacant House seats.
