Todo El Mundo Loves Ron Paul

Posted on June 21, 2007, 1:20pm |Brian Doherty

Alvaro Vargas Llosa of the Independent Institute writes:

I was dumbfounded last week when three radio stations, one in Spain and two in Latin America, asked me to explain who American presidential hopeful Ron Paul is and why his candidacy in the Republican primaries has generated such a buzz. The congressman from Texas has hardly registered in national polls but is a political celebrity in the blogosphere and on cable TV Web sites, and has been the subject of front-page stories in The Washington Post and other major news outlets. Apparently, he is making waves around the world too.

We should get Ron Paul on Sabado Gigante... that'd be awesome. I don't think his white wife would approve though.

I've never heard of the writer, but he's from Peru and shares both his surnames with writer Mario Vargas Llosa, so it's probably his brother.

But his piece is the best overview of the Paul phenomenon I've seen so far, and I e-mailed him that yesterday. Good writer with a good grasp of American history and Ron Paul's coming place in it, especially impressive considering English isn't the author's first language.

I wonder if his anti-imperial stance cancels out his views on immigration in the eyes of hispanic and latino voters.

how can the hispanics and latino argue with 'fair treatment under the law'?

well, nobody can argue with that, in my opinion. But they may have differing views due to their proximity to the issue.

I'm not suggesting that all hispanics think alike, because I know that's not true.

Both anti-Communist, anti-Socialist, Liberal (true Liberal, not American style), and authors. Good guys.

Mario Vargas Llosa is one of the most knows writes is latin America and also in the world. He also run for presidency in 1990 in Peru and finish second to Fujimori. I think he was a good candidate and he wanted change in my country. I would have vote for him but I was too young at the time.

I haven't gotten Llosa's book of Marquez criticism yet. But I'll keep an eye out for it. Did you ever read any Alvaro's work?

saludos

spanish practice;)
