The Truth About Raw and Pasteurized Milk

I do think that the FDA restriction on selling raw milk across states lines should be removed and the swat team practices ended but I disagree with this notion that raw milk is inherently healthy. Pasteurization is overall a good thing as it removes micro organisms and pathogens which are potentially dangerous. The real problem with pasteurized milk is the cows they are crowded into pens, feed corn rather than grass, anti-biotics, puss, and all the other disgusting things that go into milk. The best bet is milk grass feed and free range whole milk but that is still pasteurized. There is nothing inherently unsafe about raw milk but by drinking you it take a gamble with your life. People will often say "but we have been drinking raw milk for thousands of years!" but during that time we had many diseases and lived shorter life spans.

Come around here. You can get raw milk from small farms in the stores, at the farmer's market or straight from the farm. We don't care if you drive in from other states with more restrictive raw milk laws (all states have more restrictive raw milk laws than New Hampshire). We don't care if you drive the milk out of state. Try raw yogurt while your at it.

IMO, raw milk is healthier than cooked milk because it has more nutrients. It tastes slightly better but they both taste pretty similar to me. Raw milk is a lot more expensive :(

Cheese is healthier than milk because the lactose has been at least partially, and sometimes almost totally, converted. Butter is even better because it has eliminated most of the lactose and the casein as well.

I eat cheese and butter.

The lactose is less of an issue with raw milk, though. I certainly do enjoy cheese and butter and cream cheese and sour cream and cottage cheese and cheese curds and ice cream more than milk, though :)

To play devil's advocate, I drink raw milk. I feel there are many health benefits to drinking raw milk from reputable farmers versus pasturized milk. You aknowledge that pasturization kills anything living in the milk.

Raw milk is full of healthy bacteria that is essential to the flora and fauna in our bodies. Further, I think that many of our health problems as a species can be traced back to this imbalance in the healthy bacteria in our bodies.

Pasturized milk does kill everything in it, but think about that. THis gives farmers and ranchers ZERO incentive to keep their act clean. The milk you drink is full of DEAD puss, DEAD poop, DEAD bacteria, dead bugs, on and on. My milk comes from a farmer who practices open range, grass fed techniques and runs a VERY CLEAN operation.

I'd put my milk against any pasturized milk in terms of health benefits, cleanliness, sustainability, etc.

Plus it pisses the government off that I drink it so.... :p

You're using flawed logic. Just because humans supposedly had shorter life spans with many diseases and drank raw milk does not mean raw milk is the culprit for shorter life spans and more diseases. There are a plethora of reasons for again, the supposedly shorter life spans.

I've worked in the dairy business for the better part of the last 13 years. The only milk that needs to be pasteurized is the milk that you shouldn't drink in the first place. The main reason for poor quality milk with high levels of bacteria is the factory like setting that the cows are placed in. I've worked on a small organic dairy farm. I know how the cows are raised, what they eat, where they sleep, where and how they get milked, and know that the somatic cell count in our cows in quite low.

Raw milk can be used to make cheeses here too. The cheese must be aged a minimum of 60 days though. Many of the great European cheeses are aged less than that.

That isn't necessarily true. Dairy cattle require forage but are often supplemented with grain as well. Dairy cattle are usually fed less grain than beef cattle.
 
A lot of people who have a hard time digesting lactose in pasteurized milk do better with raw milk because it has bacteria that helps your gut break down the lactose.

I would drink raw milk, but it is expensive and doesn't last long and nobody else in my house would help me with it so it ends up going bad.. and then you're supposed to use it to make yogurt but there is usually very little left for the effort, though I've never completely gone through with it either..

I do eat grass fed cheese and I get a little pastured/pasteurized milk that I steam up for my grass fed butter and coconut oil latte in the morning, but I don't know if it is worth using raw milk if I'm going to heat it up anyway and I use so little and would never get through it fast enough.

But generally, raw milk does taste better, it's healthier and easier for more people to digest.
 
And where do the cows walk around and sit? And where do they eat?

In pasture vs pen debate it's all about dilution of the manure. Feces are on/in everything but people make the decision of how concentrated they want it. Cows will shit in their feed troughs sometimes in a pen.

Well, to be fair, raw milk has puss and blood in it too and it hasn't been cooked. Think about that next time you're drinking milk. :D
