The Pickle Challenge - Try To Find A Grocery Brand of Pickles Without The Following Toxic

Pickles are SO fast and easy to make, there is really no reason to buy them.

Totally agree. My grandparents grow cucumbers and then make and can all of their pickles -- I've helped them a couple times. They'll even make quirky flavors like sweet, sour, or lime-flavored pickles. It's cool stuff.

State of abundance in cold pack 1/2 gallons of pickles now. Faster than I can eat em. High Mowing Bush Cukes. clove/allspice/cinnamon Gonna have to start hot packing soon so they last longer.

Bubbies is the only real fermented dill pickle that I know of that is distributed nationally. If a pickle has vinegar in it, then it isn't a true old school style fermented dill pickle and doesn't have any probiotic benefits. Vinegar is a cheat used to mimic the acidic taste of a true ferment. Vinegar is used in most store bought sauerkruats too. If you can't get Bubbies where you live, and there are no local fermented pickles being sold either, your best bet is to make your own. Pickles are probably the easiest ferment there is.

I cannot find the kind of pickles I used to enjoy as a kid. I think I got them at the little league ball park concession stand or maybe the beach boardwalk. They would take one out of a big jar and wrap it in a sheet of wax paper I think. They were the best things ever, and I can't find any like them now. They may not be for everyone, because they were NOT crunchy. They were big, very dark green, very DENSE in texture, relatively vinegary tasting, and, like I said, not crunchy. But firm due to the denseness. Does this ring a bell with anyone? Does anyone have any ideas what brand(s) they might be? Thanks.

P.S. Sorry I can't attest to any of the ingredients so I don't know if they were/are healthy.

I remember those... just know them as barrel pickles...

Trader Joes products are made for them- mostly by major manufacturers though they won't say which ones. Stacy's for example makes their pita chips and Stonyfield makes their house brand yogurts.
