**The Official** Republican Convention thread

Strange.

I live in NY and find myself voting for Republicans all the time.

Not in a NYC primary. Our kiddos have been unable to vote in a single primary since they've lived there, and my daughter had a spotless voting record when she lived here.

Tennessee doesn't require party affiliation to vote in a primary, but we have to declare which primary we want to vote in. I generally vote Republican, but if I want an actual choice in a primary, I have to declare that I am voting in the Democratic primary. Primaries are publicly financed means for parties to select candidates. The Davidson County Republican Party is lazy as can be. We haven't had a conservative Congressman in the 5th district in over 30 years. As far as I know, my state legislative district has never had a conservative.

Cruz's is a poll tested loser- I think Rand got out while it was still safe. Cruz will be blamed for every republican party loss until 2020 not Trump. Rand will be the man who stood by his word.

I hope so, but I'm not so sure...

I still think Rand ought to have pointedly not endorsed Trump a few months ago, as NeverTrump was peaking.

Someone was going to take up the conservative-opposition mantle, and it should have Rand rather than Cruz.

In Nashville, Democrats like Megan Barry run as "independent", but in the rural counties sometimes I've seen GOP candidates running "independent".

She's not independent. She is a social liberal beholden to special interests. She's more liberal than the worst Democrats.

is why "independent" is in quotes. The republicans for state legislature do it also, in counties outside Nashville that vote 60-70% republican in federal elections. I'm guessing they do it because their support is so polarized by party label that they can't get nonpartisans to vote for them.

Draft of acceptance speech:

Friends, delegates and fellow Americans: I humbly and gratefully accept your nomination for the presidency of the United States.

Together, we will lead our party back to the White House, and we will lead our country back to safety, prosperity, and peace. We will be a country of generosity and warmth. But we will also be a country of law and order.

Our Convention occurs at a moment of crisis for our nation. The attacks on our police, and the terrorism in our cities, threaten our very way of life. Any politician who does not grasp this danger is not fit to lead our country.

Americans watching this address tonight have seen the recent images of violence in our streets and the chaos in our communities. Many have witnessed this violence personally, some have even been its victims.

I have a message for all of you: the crime and violence that today afflicts our nation will soon come to an end. Beginning on January 20th 2017, safety will be restored.

The most basic duty of government is to defend the lives of its own citizens. Any government that fails to do so is a government unworthy to lead.

It is finally time for a straightforward assessment of the state of our nation.

I will present the facts plainly and honestly. We cannot afford to be so politically correct anymore.

So if you want to hear the corporate spin, the carefully-crafted lies, and the media myths the Democrats are holding their convention next week.

But here, at our convention, there will be no lies. We will honor the American people with the truth, and nothing else.

These are the facts:

Decades of progress made in bringing down crime are now being reversed by this Administration’s rollback of criminal enforcement.

Homicides last year increased by 17% in America’s fifty largest cities. That’s the largest increase in 25 years. In our nation’s capital, killings have risen by 50 percent. They are up nearly 60% in nearby Baltimore.

In the President’s hometown of Chicago, more than 2,000 have been the victims of shootings this year alone. And more than 3,600 have been killed in the Chicago area since he took office.

The number of police officers killed in the line of duty has risen by almost 50% compared to this point last year. Nearly 180,000 illegal immigrants with criminal records, ordered deported from our country, are tonight roaming free to threaten peaceful citizens.

Rumors that sometime during this, Clinton will announce her running mate.

Yeah but Cruz was just copying Rand there again. Rand was the conservative opposition before he went into senate re-election mode. When Rand argued the logical conclusion to the 2016 race he set himself up for 2020. He called Trump out for hedging his bets for the Clintons to win, the only way that Rand is wrong is if the Clintons lose. Amost all of his messaging is anti Clinton, Rand is campaigning against Clinton. It would be hard to blame him for Clinton winning, if he has all of these anti Clinton attack ads playing..

Jerry Falwell Jr was up talking about supporting Trump's proposing to repeal the Johnson Amendment. That could have huge positive ramifications culturally in this country against the left's war on religion in this country.

Another issue Cruz chose to ignore which shows how selfish Cruz was last night only thinking of himself.

Pitchfork inspired? I've been waiting many years for this moment. I thought I would never see a paleocon inspired speech by a major party candidate.
