The Federal Reserve said Sunday it had granted a request by the last two major U.S. investment banks — Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley — to change their status to bank holding companies.

The Fed announced that it had approved the request of the two investment banks. The change in status will allow them to create commercial banks that will be able to take deposits, bolstering the resources of both institutions.

...

The decision means that the Goldman and Morgan Stanley will be able not only to set up commercial bank subsidiaries to take deposits, giving them a major resource base, but they will also have the same access as other commercial banks to the Fed's emergency loan program.

Gee, what a surprise. Not.

In the surprise announcement late Sunday, the central bank said that to provide increase funding support to Goldman (GS, Fortune 500) and Morgan (MS, Fortune 500) during the transition period, they would be allowed to get short-term loans from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York against various types of collateral

Anyone know what was used as "collateral"?

Sadly I've read all the news on this out there, and I'm still not sure what will happen to my long position in GS tomorrow.

This may be scene as an act of desperation, or a bolstering of their balance sheet position.

Who freakin' knows.

I wouldn't be surprised to find out they wanted to change status so that they would QUALIFY for all the FREE GOODIES that are going to be poured out in the future.

Well, if we dont' prop these businesses up...what is going to happen? Are you all ready to live in a cave? Got your food stored? Water? I know you think it's cool...but will you when your power goes off? That's what will happen. Sometimes being right isn't the best thing. They might have to be bailed or it's going to hurt a lot of people who had nothing to do with it like you and me. Heck...Americans are too darn spoiled for a real revolution. The solution is to work for real change. Tones

Yeah, like anyone is going to want to put their money in Goldman Sachs or Morgan Stanley at this point. The run started before they even got a deposit.

They'll probably deposit all of their own money into FDIC insured accounts and then took that money and redeposited it, over and over again, then fail on purpose, and BAM! They make a a huge profit and flee into the sunset.

one more....what is long position?:) and how do you pronounce your name?

"Long" means that I purchased the stock hoping that it will appreciate in value.

The "ow" is the same sound as in "bowl".

Nothing like some Sunday evening takeovers.

Where's a faceplam pic when you need one?
