The Danger Of Taking Thyroid Drugs And Antibiotics: A Warning

Written By Holtorf Medical Group

If you are hypothyroid and taking a prescription thyroid hormone replacement drug like levothyroxine (i.e., Synthroid, Levoxyl, Tirosint) and you are prescribed an antibiotic, you will want to make sure that you know about how thyroid drugs and antibiotics can interact, affecting the absorption of your thyroid medication.

A study from the journal Thyroid found that the antibiotic ciprofloxacin – known more commonly by brand names Cipro, Proquin, Ciproxin, Ciprobay, Cirpoxine, and Ciflox — significantly decreased the absorption of the thyroid medication. [Keep in mind that some experts feel that the warning about ciprofloxacin applies also to similar quinolone antibiotics such as levofloxacin (Levaquin), lomefloxacin (Maxaquin), monifloxacin (Avelox), norfloxacin (Norox-In), and ofloxacin (Floxin).]

This means that if you are taking thyroid drugs and an antibiotic from the quinolone family, it could interfere with absorption, and cause you to become substantially more hypothyroid.

Interesting... many of my family members are on synthroid, many having phyically removed thryroid or parathyroid. We suspect (without proof) it was from growing up next to farm land and playing in the rain of the crop dusting planes in the 50's, as many of their old friends and neighbors are in the same predicament.

I won't take quinolones. They cause tendon and cartilage damage. I have no thyroid and also missing 3/4 of my parathyroids. I take Naturethroid which is prescription pig thyroid and not synthetic. I actually try to avoid antibiotics but have had sinus infections I just couldnt get rid of. For UTIs I have requested Bactrim which is a sulpha drug in place of things Levequan which is what they always try to push on you. I always bear in mind that it's really the drug company prescribing your medication. I had to fight to get natural thyroid. A couple of days of reduced effectiveness won't kill you. I've forgotten to take my thyroid some days. Supplementing with organic coconut oil and sea salt along with adrenal support helps with hypo too, btw.

Anyone with thyroid issues should check out this site http://www.stopthethyroidmadness.com/

Great info! Thanks for posting.

Its best not to use antibiotics unless you really need them anyways. Over-use or mis-use can lead to antibiotic resistant strains of bacteria.

I've probably had a UTI a dozen or so times in my life. Not once have I had to resort to anything beyond a few quarts of organic whole cranberry juice, from Lakewood, Knudson, or Santa Cruz:

It drinks like medicine :)

I love that stuff with a jig of Vodka. :D

In all seriousness Bio Organics Cranberry is a good supplement that my Naturopath recommended.
