"The Tennessee Star learned on Wednesday that Kilmar Abrego Garcia, an alleged member of the Central American gang Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13) who was deported to El Salvador under President Donald Trump amid legal action claiming the removal was by mistake, was suspected of being engaged in human trafficking by a Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) officer who detained him in December 2022, leading the THP to contact the FBI for guidance. Within two hours, the FBI ultimately requested the THP release Garcia and the passengers in his vehicle. THP complied with the request....

THP subsequently called the FBI, which was then led by former Director Christopher Wray under the Biden administration. The FBI instructed the THP officers at the scene to capture photographs of all eight people in the vehicle and document its contents.

Once the photographs were captured, this source told The Star that the FBI requested THP release all eight individuals and that the THP officers complied with this request.

The Star learned that the circumstances of the stop made the THP officer responsible for the stop concerned that Abrego Garcia was engaged in human trafficking, but that Abrego Garcia and his passengers were nonetheless released at the request of the FBI....

Sources familiar with the Computerized Dispatch Report of the incident told The Star that the officer who filed the report confirmed that the seven individuals in the van were being transported from Texas to Maryland by Garcia."

Remember this guy? He still has not been deported after nearly 11 months of the inept Trump administration. For all the criticism of MTG, at least her legislative actions are consistent with a principled person. The sycophants of Trump's cult only care about worthless rhetoric apparently. Like all politicians, MTG's associations are less than ideal, e.g. Trump's inlaws still involved in policy. Trump, I'd suggest you resign so we can see if Vance is a principled doer like MTG instead of a cult leader.

Judge orders Kilmar Abrego Garcia be released from ICE custody ‘immediately’
A federal judge in Maryland ordered the release of Kilmar Abrego Garcia from ICE custody “immediately,” according to a Thursday court filing, a significant development in the case concerning the El Salvadoran man mistakenly deported this year before being returned to the United States.

Abrego Garcia’s wrongful deportation has been the basis of a fraught legal battle that’s included tense confrontations between the judge and the Justice Department. It has also come to embody the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown and aggressive posture in trying to deport immigrants to far-flung countries.

“Since Abrego Garcia’s return from wrongful detention in El Salvador, he has been re-detained, again without lawful authority,” district Judge Paula Xinis wrote. “For this reason, the Court will GRANT Abrego Garcia’s Petition for immediate release from ICE custody.”

“Abrego Garcia’s case demands judicial intervention,” Xinis added.

The Trump administration has struggled in recent weeks to find a country to quickly deport him to. Judges are able to order officials to release detained migrants if their removal from the US doesn’t appear imminent.

That reality, coupled with the fact that Xinis found that no order of removal currently exists for Abrego Garcia, meant that he was being unlawfully held in a remote immigration detention facility in Pennsylvania.

“Because Abrego Garcia has been held in ICE detention to effectuate third-country removal absent a lawful removal order, his requested relief is proper,” she wrote, adding that the administration’s “conduct over the past months belie that his detention has been for the basic purpose of effectuating removal, lending further support that Abrego Garcia should be held no longer.”

While Xinis did not define “immediately,” the judge said that the Justice Department must report on the status of his release by 5pm ET Thursday.
