The best way to protest the media blackout of this past election cycle *cancel your cable

Well, my cable was cancelled, now that I live with my girlfriend, I am trying to convince her that we don't need it. I don't care for it after the years I didn't have it. So, yes it is still on in my house where I am now, but it will soon be cancelled. Never thought about that specs, I did sort of contradict myself, son of a %R$#!

Yeah, I'd love to cancel it too -- went the better part of a decade without one, even missed all that 9/11 coverage -- I don't care about it but I'm not the only one here... At least Nick Jr doesn't have commercials.

If you get with your neighbors, you only really need 1 or 2 with a decent broadband connection. Everyone else can set up wifi antennas and share. Here's the first community to do it : http://seattlewireless.net/

It is hard to get people to understand that they don't need a 'bundle'. The internet and phone is what people are paying for, and the cable access is usually just thrown in for free. When you call in to cancel your cable, they act like you are talking crazy talk. But everything on the cable can be found online, just like the phone access can also be done online. But there are still people who are paying for long distance.

You essentially have to go over there and set up the equipment- they are not going to take it upon themselves to learn how it works.

Yeah when you live with others it's different... especially kids. But I still liked not having it, and I don't watch it still to this day because of not having it for those years. Yet I see it on in the living room cause the girlfriend is watching her shows, while I'm mostly online

I think it's a great way to say F U to the system, while getting back a monetary benefit though, as well as some sanity. With having a kid though, you probably need it for some sanity

Aren't you a college student? Did you switch schools?

I had to go back to TV when I got married. I still hate it. I really hate that my kids grew up with it.

We got it at the end of pregnancy -- by request, not like I could say no at that point. I fondly remember the summer my mom quizzed us on some memorization stuff and found we had forgotten it, declared that tv had turned our brains to marshmellows and banned it from the house for the summer. It was a great summer.

No I'm not a college student, although I still take courses as needed as I am now. I am a free thinker, born and bread to rebel against authority. I still haven't gotten married, just always had long term and some short term girlfriends. I still have too much energy within me to just settle down, yet I may sooner than I think. I grew up with the TV too, that is my whole point in bringing this thread up. Back in 08' I made a crazy decision to tell my cable to cut it - and I had some of the best times and conversations during that time. Now I'm living with another girlfriend, who I may marry but she just loves TV, and she's paying for that, but she is awakening and soon there will be no TV.

Moved in with my wife over a year ago and have yet to sign up for tv yet. We will probably get a flat screen in 6 months or so, but plan on just watching stuff over the internet when we need to catch up on shows like breaking bad or mad men.

Edit/ breaking bad on tonight? anyone know?

The key is to DVR your favorite shows and only watch that. That way you get your shows in and not waste hours flipping around. Breaking Bad is a freaking awesome show.

lol at above synchronized breaking bad reference! It was on and it was AWESOME.

Holy crap, just watched it. That was insane.

My wife and I don't have cable, we don't even have an antenna hooked up for local channels. Been that way for 4+ years now. If enough were to cancel, that would hurt them, but we must also remember that actions speak volumes. If we get 10-20 people per week, calling one company each day saying they won't support their company anymore because of their advertisements on lying segments of Fox, CNN, MSNBC, etc., that is one more way to hurt the problems directly...the "news" stations for being dishonest.
If you get the CEO's phone number to these companies, and you get to their secretary...she does not want her mailbox filled up with voicemails about advertising and not buying a company's product. Usually the issue is resolved quickly, but it has to be in a decent enough group, and the group has to be persistent.

If I had TV I'd cancel it. I don't even have a digital receiver thinigy-muhbob.

Same here.

We cancelled a few years back. Last fall a guy came around and said it would only be $8 more a month to add cable to our Internet package. We bit. Turned out to be $28. We kept it for 2, maybe 3 months at most before deciding we didn't want/need it. We just left it on in the background playing Storage Wars and the like - it in no way augmented our lives, we spend the $28 elsewhere now.

Got rid of cable about 6 years ago and was one of the best things we ever did. At 80 bucks a month we literally saved thousands. Went with an antenna, a 50 dollar investment.
