FORT WORTH, Texas – A woman in Texas was sentenced Wednesday to a five-year prison term for voting illegally in the 2016 presidential election while on supervised release for a tax fraud conviction.

When she voted in the 2016 election, Crystal Mason had already served almost three years in prison for her fraud conviction but had not yet completed her sentence and was still serving a three-year supervised release period, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

Convicted felons lose their voting rights in Texas until they complete their full sentences, including parole and probation.
Mason reportedly told the court, however, that she was not aware of that prohibition and had not been informed that she was ineligible to vote until her sentence was complete.
“She voted in good faith,” Mason’s defense attorney J. Warren St. John said in an interview. “I don’t think she should be going to prison for that.” Her attorney has already filed an appeal. “I think Texas law is extreme in terms of sentencing people to prison for voting violations,” he said.
Mason signed an affidavit in order to cast a provisional ballot, which stated that it is a violation of the law to vote if you are a convicted felon, but Mason did not see that part of the ballot, St. John said.
“Ms. Mason was never asked if she was a convicted felon by the election judge nor did she indicate that she was a convicted felon,” her attorney said. “Ms. Mason voted in good faith that she could legally vote because she was never notified by any government agency that it was against the law to vote.”

Prosecutors argued that Mason either intended to vote illegally or should have been aware that she was not eligible to vote, according to The Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
“There were multiple safeguards in place to keep Crystal Mason from breaking the law, but she still made that choice,” Tarrant County Criminal District Attorney Sharen Wilson said a statement.
“She signed and affirmed a document which clearly stated that (1) she was prohibited from voting due to her status as a convicted felon still serving her term of supervision, and (2) she would be committing a second degree felony if she lied about her status,” Wilson said. “The judge found her guilty of illegal voting beyond a reasonable doubt.”
The Star-Telegram reported at the time of her indictment that Mason believed she was being targeted for her vote — which she said she cast for Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.

During the 2016 campaign, Donald Trump regularly said that the election was “rigged” against him, and after he won the presidential election, he claimed without evidence that massive voter fraud had cost him the popular vote.

These people wear me out. Yes felons should be able to vote. No, you weren't targeted because you voted for Hillary. And the Donald Trump stuff has nothing to do with the story.

The law needs changed . As long as govt.'s collect taxes , people outside of prison are paying taxes . They should be able to vote . Unless you wish to restrict voting to property and business owners and I can live with that .

You shouldn't. I have it on good authority that billions of illegal votes were cast in 2016. They just haven't found them yet.

I have it on good authority your mental health counselor is not happy with the lack of progress and is considering increasing your dose.

Only property owners should vote. They are the only ones who own the land. The rest of us should either get with the program or move. Once you understand this there is no need to worry about “illegal immigration”.

Nobody owns property- stop paying your taxes & the real owners will show up.

Only 5,699,999 more to find.

This is not the first case of a voter fraud conviction in Texas.

Rosa Maria Ortega, 37, an immigrant with a green card, was convicted of voting illegally in the 2012 presidential election and the 2014 Republican primary.

She was sentenced a year ago to eight years in prison, and to be deported afterwards.

When I had just my green card and was still in college, I would get the voter registration drives people at my college trying to get me registered. The sad part is that some one them did not even know that I cannot vote as a green card holder. I would ask em if I could vote with my green card and some would say yes but I knew better. I knew that if I voted with my green card that would disqualify me from applying to be a US citizen and could even lead to my card being revoked and me deported.

Know the law people.
