Texas GOP argue over proposed therapy to turn gays straight

People should be able to seek any kind of therapy that they want!! Or not if they don't!

Oh FFS.

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) - Locked in an ideological struggle between tea party activists and traditional conservatives, the Texas Republican Convention was hammering out a platform Saturday set to preserve a softer stance on immigration, while also endorsing voluntary counseling to “cure” being gay.

Booing and shouting sometimes interrupted hours of debate among roughly 7,000 delegates, and party chairman Steve Munisteri pleaded for civility. [...]

Meanwhile, delegates looked poised to avoid a floor fight as they considered scrapping long-standing platform language that “homosexuality tears at the fabric of society.” But they also were set to sanction language allowing Texans to seek voluntary counseling to “cure” being gay - in contrast to California and New Jersey, which have previously banned such therapy, citing evidence it was dangerous to young people.

Gay conservatives said they didn’t want to oppose the motion for fear there could be a backlash resulting in even harsher platform language.

What tears at society more? Homosexuality?

How about sending our best people overseas to be blown to bits in useless wars and a stagnate economy?

I actually believe both of those things tear at society. But I don't think homosexuality should be a political issue. Its a religious/cultural issue. War, on the other hand, is a political issue.

BTW: most modern Republicans are some of the most abominable anti-family people you'll ever meet. I find the fact that most of these people who would say homosexuality is anti-family (even though they are correct) also support the US Military and police to be downright disgusting.

Best people? What algorithm determined that?

Depending on what is meant by best... good intentions: most likely, wants to do what is perceived as the right thing: most likely, wants to be loved: check, got conned into it by a recruiter while high: very likely.

Not necessarily unlikable.

Supposedly the "cure" is voluntary. I see no reason this should be part of a campaign platform. Kind of hard to tell Dems you want smaller government and then embrace crap like this.

I'm neither in favor nor opposed to these cures because I have no idea if they work, what methods are used, side effects, etc. But I agree that this makes no sense to have in a campaign platform. Homosexuality should not be a political issue at all.

relieve (a person or animal) of the symptoms of a disease or condition.

Since being gay is neither a disease or condition, it is a known that it doesn't work. It's like me saying I don't know if your plan to contact the invisible flying spaghetti monster will work. People should be allowed to engage in whatever foolish nonsense they choose, including entertaining discussions about the efficacy of quackery.

This is the kind of pointless neanderthal nonsense that keeps a lot of educated, intelligent people from supporting the Republican Party.

How does this help the Republican Party?

I have no idea who that guy is, but I do know that some gay people do want children and are fully capable of producing same without ever "curing", abandoning, or even denying their homosexuality.

^ this. With the operative word here (IMHO) being "pointless".

If Republicans want to win over young people, they need to pick their battles a little better. This continual need to force moral imperatives does more to alienate and makes them look small minded and kind of stupid. You can't wash the gay away. It's as bad as Dems trying to force it down our throats the other direction. No pun intended.
