GM might even be able to make cars profitably if they pay their workers $2 and $3 an hour. all it would take would be to abolish the minimum wage in the state of Michiagan, and all of a sudden, all these businesses would come in and start making things again using all this skilled labour for slave wages. Someone who worked construction for 30 years is probably a good worker and could be put to good use if he was willing to accept a very low wage. So imagine if a company came by this tent city in Sacromento, and told this guy and his wife that they could come on the company bus to Michigan and work for $3 and $2 an hour, but that they could rent a house for $100 a month (or $50 a month if they split the house with another family, or $25 a month with 3 other families). They would accept this offer in a second. even though they wouldn't be making much money, these two people would have a roof over their head, could afford food, and could also probably afford a TV and cable so he can watch the news. Many things like TV sets, microwaves, toasters and very cheap (espeically used) and you could actually afford a lot of these basic items only making a few dollars an hour.

All cash for clunkers did was take inventory off the lot. Some of the less expensive cars, Cobalt, Focus etc did experience some shortages and manufacturing picked up.

But in reality, all that program did was take tomorrows demand and bring it to today. That's not doing much in the long term, and only disrupts the business cycle.

Sorry, but that is how a free market works. We don't like free markets in this country.

I am a college student, and live on about $500/month. We don't use AC, which sucks living in TX, but our power bill is only $55. $25 per day would cover my livings costs. I actually live a very comfortable lifestyle minus the AC. I would not consider my self poor. But I also go to college, which many people don't have the opportunity to do.

Uh, did you not understand the concept of poor people getting roommates? If you had five+ wage earners living in a house, they would be able to afford everything they needed and be able to put some back while living in relative comfort (ie better than a tent). My mother came to live with me because she wasn't able to make it on her own any more. Her meager, less than minimum wage income really helps out, as does the work she does around the house. There is an economy of scale here, one which makes me want to invite more people to live with us. Why do you think immigrants have so many roommates? You thought they liked the company?

We didn't "give away" our manufacturing base. We ran it out of town on a rail with our high tax rates and onerous regulations (including minimum wages, which denied entry level jobs to many workers). Wage inflation is one of the factors that has come about from biased union regulations imposed by the Federal government.

Honestly, what the hell is this argument? It's straight out of the Obama forums. I guess we Americans are entitled to a better way of life no matter what, huh? I guess we are somehow immune to the consequences of our habits, and those of our governments? I guess everyone has to make more than $10/hour to survive, no matter their circumstances.

I presime the hotels and security are getting expensive because I read Janet Napolitano is funding $2.5-3 BILLION in Dentention centers. Such a coincidence that we have Billions to house, feed, and clothe foreigners, but no jobs or rooms for homeless Americans eh?

Look into business practices of the early years in gm and ford... they would love to implement your ideas. Your theory sounds good on paper but is unfeasible. The houses in the rust belt that are selling so cheap are by and large catastrophies where deferred maintenence is putting it nicely. A shrewd person could find a fair deal, but it ain't as easy as it seems ( we looked at hundreds of homes before we found a diamond in the rough, most have huge roofing issues, no plumbing (as in at all the pipes are stripped) and hundred + year old wiring). Plus living without heat isn't an option up here like poster who does without ac in Texas to get by.

Even at $3 an hour the jobs will not be available in the rust belt as they are already offshored. Better to suggest we infiltrate Mexico.

Lowering wages DECREASES the pool of workers, it doesn't increase it. It also increases the number of job openings.
