do you know what would really help these people... lowering or abolishing the minimum wage. don't you think that guy in this interview would work for $3 an hour if he could? sure, it's not a lot of money, but if he made $25 a day, that would be enough for him to afford food, he could live in a cheap house with many other people, he could afford electricity, plumbing, heat, etc.
some of these houses in Detriot are selling for like $7k or less... some are practically free. why not get some of these people up there, someone would hire them for $3 an hour making something... he would make $25 a day, 5 days a week would be $125 per week, or $500 per month. well, how much would rent be if you rented some house that was only worth like $10k, and you split it with other people. your rent would be maybe $50 or $100 a month, and you would have maybe $400 a month to spend on the basics. If you live in a really cheap house with a bunch of people, the cost of living there isn't very expensive and it is a hell of a lot better than a tent. And if his wife also got a job for $3 an hour, or even $2 an hour... that would go a long way towards really improving their quality of life. this is what a lot of people in china make, and they make due only earning that amount.
GM might even be able to make cars profitably if they pay their workers $2 and $3 an hour. all it would take would be to abolish the minimum wage in the state of Michiagan, and all of a sudden, all these businesses would come in and start making things again using all this skilled labour for slave wages. Someone who worked construction for 30 years is probably a good worker and could be put to good use if he was willing to accept a very low wage. So imagine if a company came by this tent city in Sacromento, and told this guy and his wife that they could come on the company bus to Michigan and work for $3 and $2 an hour, but that they could rent a house for $100 a month (or $50 a month if they split the house with another family, or $25 a month with 3 other families). They would accept this offer in a second. even though they wouldn't be making much money, these two people would have a roof over their head, could afford food, and could also probably afford a TV and cable so he can watch the news. Many things like TV sets, microwaves, toasters and very cheap (espeically used) and you could actually afford a lot of these basic items only making a few dollars an hour.
