Tent Cities On The Rise

All those homeless should of bought a huge home they can't afford... they would have a roof that's rent free.

All the shelters are maxed out... but don't worry the Grubamint just ordered $22 BILLION in White house helicopters and Congress just up the Capital hill budget by 7% for more polished Granite, Marble, Brass & Lawns within the Roman Imperial Empire DC Beltway. Hmm, maybe some more Trillion dollar globalist actions will save the homeless?

ELITIST... Americans are such fools to tolerate it. I watched that Flem mouth speaking Rep. Debbie Wasserman-Schultz plugging one government agency after another for increases...

I think the lowest increase in the capital budget for FY 2010 was the GAO... Imagine That

That Major Johnson is another scam artist within the Obozo regime's umbrella... remember the Inspector General that exposed Mayor Johnson using federal monies for trips to NYC, Limos, and parties? Yeah... MSM, the one sided shallow stories that only skip the surface of problems and tragedies. The IG official that exposed Mayor Kevin Johnson was fired by Obama regime.

Janet Napolitano plans on putting the illegals up in california hotels that have closed due to the economy - at least until she finds a way to make them legal democrats.
These poor people are citizens that get nothing.

one of the people in video used to sell cars.

with the end of cash for clunkers and the end of the small car boom, are we going to see more people live in these tent cities?

do you know what would really help these people... lowering or abolishing the minimum wage. don't you think that guy in this interview would work for $3 an hour if he could? sure, it's not a lot of money, but if he made $25 a day, that would be enough for him to afford food, he could live in a cheap house with many other people, he could afford electricity, plumbing, heat, etc.

some of these houses in Detriot are selling for like $7k or less... some are practically free. why not get some of these people up there, someone would hire them for $3 an hour making something... he would make $25 a day, 5 days a week would be $125 per week, or $500 per month. well, how much would rent be if you rented some house that was only worth like $10k, and you split it with other people. your rent would be maybe $50 or $100 a month, and you would have maybe $400 a month to spend on the basics. If you live in a really cheap house with a bunch of people, the cost of living there isn't very expensive and it is a hell of a lot better than a tent. And if his wife also got a job for $3 an hour, or even $2 an hour... that would go a long way towards really improving their quality of life. this is what a lot of people in china make, and they make due only earning that amount.

GM might even be able to make cars profitably if they pay their workers $2 and $3 an hour. all it would take would be to abolish the minimum wage in the state of Michiagan, and all of a sudden, all these businesses would come in and start making things again using all this skilled labour for slave wages. Someone who worked construction for 30 years is probably a good worker and could be put to good use if he was willing to accept a very low wage. So imagine if a company came by this tent city in Sacromento, and told this guy and his wife that they could come on the company bus to Michigan and work for $3 and $2 an hour, but that they could rent a house for $100 a month (or $50 a month if they split the house with another family, or $25 a month with 3 other families). They would accept this offer in a second. even though they wouldn't be making much money, these two people would have a roof over their head, could afford food, and could also probably afford a TV and cable so he can watch the news. Many things like TV sets, microwaves, toasters and very cheap (espeically used) and you could actually afford a lot of these basic items only making a few dollars an hour.

perhaps. the car business is grinding right now, pretty much everything appears to be.

Best damn argument I've seen for getting rid of the minimum wage.

All cash for clunkers did was take inventory off the lot. Some of the less expensive cars, Cobalt, Focus etc did experience some shortages and manufacturing picked up.

But in reality, all that program did was take tomorrows demand and bring it to today. That's not doing much in the long term, and only disrupts the business cycle.

Sorry, but that is how a free market works. We don't like free markets in this country.

I am a college student, and live on about $500/month. We don't use AC, which sucks living in TX, but our power bill is only $55. $25 per day would cover my livings costs. I actually live a very comfortable lifestyle minus the AC. I would not consider my self poor. But I also go to college, which many people don't have the opportunity to do.

Lowering the minimum wage isn't going to help anyone. What we need is to start making things in America again. We need a manufacturing base, and we gave it way with NAFTA.

Besides, the minimum of $ 7.25 an hour is a fracken piece of sh** wage to begin with, given how expensive things are these days. Could you survive on less than that? Give me a break.

I'm not saying I like the government dictating wages, but getting rid of the minimum wage is not the answer to all our problems like some think it is.

Uh, did you not understand the concept of poor people getting roommates? If you had five+ wage earners living in a house, they would be able to afford everything they needed and be able to put some back while living in relative comfort (ie better than a tent). My mother came to live with me because she wasn't able to make it on her own any more. Her meager, less than minimum wage income really helps out, as does the work she does around the house. There is an economy of scale here, one which makes me want to invite more people to live with us. Why do you think immigrants have so many roommates? You thought they liked the company?

We didn't "give away" our manufacturing base. We ran it out of town on a rail with our high tax rates and onerous regulations (including minimum wages, which denied entry level jobs to many workers). Wage inflation is one of the factors that has come about from biased union regulations imposed by the Federal government.

Honestly, what the hell is this argument? It's straight out of the Obama forums. I guess we Americans are entitled to a better way of life no matter what, huh? I guess we are somehow immune to the consequences of our habits, and those of our governments? I guess everyone has to make more than $10/hour to survive, no matter their circumstances.

Lovely. Really.

I presime the hotels and security are getting expensive because I read Janet Napolitano is funding $2.5-3 BILLION in Dentention centers. Such a coincidence that we have Billions to house, feed, and clothe foreigners, but no jobs or rooms for homeless Americans eh?

I guess those new detention centers can be used for other situations when the crisis' are warranted.

of course it's not the answer to all of our problems... but it's one of the many reforms that are needed. and even though there are many things that need to be done, this is one thing that can easily be implimented and it could make all the difference for people like the ones featured in this video, where a low paying job is the difference between living in a tent and living in a house.

Look into business practices of the early years in gm and ford... they would love to implement your ideas. Your theory sounds good on paper but is unfeasible. The houses in the rust belt that are selling so cheap are by and large catastrophies where deferred maintenence is putting it nicely. A shrewd person could find a fair deal, but it ain't as easy as it seems ( we looked at hundreds of homes before we found a diamond in the rough, most have huge roofing issues, no plumbing (as in at all the pipes are stripped) and hundred + year old wiring). Plus living without heat isn't an option up here like poster who does without ac in Texas to get by.

Even at $3 an hour the jobs will not be available in the rust belt as they are already offshored. Better to suggest we infiltrate Mexico.

The one thing the minimum wage does is it prevents women from having to sell their bodies to keep their jobs. When jobs are scarce and wages become low, working for next to nothing doesn't guarantee that one will keep their job; there are thousands waiting to take that job. For a woman to keep her low paying job she must compete with other job seekers by doing sexual favors. That is what can happen in a free market. It has happened before in this country, and it will happen again as the job situation becomes worse.

I hate to tell you, but that isn't a feature of the free market. You're a crazy person.

Lowering wages DECREASES the pool of workers, it doesn't increase it. It also increases the number of job openings.

And woman can trade sexual favors for favor in ANY economy.

ITT statists make up arguments to support government intervention in job markets.

Lets see we lower wages, raise the price of bread and all goods and then force us to buy medical insurance and raise rent....rally on
