A German state premier was elected with the support of the nationalist Alternative for Germany (AfD) and Chancellor Angela Merkel's conservatives on Wednesday, shattering the post-war consensus among established parties of shunning the far right.Thomas Kemmerich, a little-known liberal Free Democrat (FDP), became the first state premier elected with the support of the AfD, with whom Merkel's conservative Christian Democrats (CDU) sided to the disgust of her national coalition partners.
The CDU and all the other established parties have previously ostracized the AfD over what they say are racist views held by some of its members.
Merkel's Social Democrat (SPD) national coalition allies accused her CDU of backtracking on a pledge never to cooperate with a far-right party. The CDU rejected the accusation, saying it was not responsible for how AfD lawmakers voted. Wednesday's ballot was secret.
"The events in Thuringia break a taboo in the history of political democracy in the Federal Republic," SPD Finance Minister Olaf Scholz tweeted. "Very serious questions arise for us with the CDU's federal leadership."
CDU leader Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer said her party's national leadership opposed both cooperating with the AfD and joining a Kemmerich-led state cabinet. "The best thing would be for voters in Thuringia to have new elections," she added.
The SPD is unlikely to ditch Merkel's national coalition over the vote in Thuringia but the center-left party said its supporters would hold a protest outside the CDU headquarters in Berlin.

"The vote on the new premier minister in the state of Thuringia marks a new milestone in German politics and bears the potential of more shockwaves in national politics," said ING economist Carsten Brzeski.

Germany AfD: Thuringia PM quits amid fury over far right

A German state premier elected with the help of the far-right AfD says he is resigning to pave the way for fresh elections.

The election of liberal leader Thomas Kemmerich in the eastern state of Thuringia prompted national outrage.

"Resignation is unavoidable," he said. For years Germany's main parties have shunned Alternative for Germany (AfD).

Chancellor Angela Merkel - whose own party also backed Mr Kemmerich - called Wednesday's election "unforgivable".

The AfD has grown in popularity in recent years but has been condemned for its extreme views on immigration, freedom of speech and the press.

Wednesday's vote was described as a political earthquake as it was the first time the AfD helped form a government in Germany, breaking a consensus among the main parties to never work with extremist parties.

Mr Kemmerich has now announced he will seek new elections in the state, "to remove the stain of the AfD's support for the office of the premiership".

He will need a two-thirds majority to dissolve the chamber and bring about a fresh vote.

I know nothing about German politics, but I suppose their position on immigration is obvious. But what is their stand on freedom of speech and freedom of the press?

Are they like the left in the United States and they want to censor speech that they don't like? Are they like the establishment in the United States that wants to put in place News Guard to ensure that all press is correct?

LOL what a cuck. Only a giant raging pussy would give up an elected seat because he received votes from people that liberals dont like.

The AfP is not neo-nazi.
Anyone that doesn't go along with the establishment - is blasted and misrepresented by them.
The fear is palpable because the establishment knows they are thieves for the bankers.

Very unlikely in the US, Obama and Trump seem to have mostly driven such Far out groups out of all spheres of influence and lately some are even being labeled as 'terrorists' by Trump administration.
