Suggestions for a new .22 rifle

Looking for a new .22. requirments; semi-auto 10+ magazine capacity, iron sights w/ option for scope mount and not too expensive.

Cabela's is selling the Ruger 10/22 for $169 right now; anybody have this gun and like/dislike anything about it? Any other models?

i currently have a stevens model 964 .22 and would like to upgrade. use is mostly target practice, plinking and the occasional varmit. it's a fun, inexpensive gun to shoot and i'd like to have something for my children to learn marksmanship with.

I've got one and I can't complain about it. I just wish there were as many after-market mods for it as there is for the 10/22.

I'm not smarter than than the weapons designers, so I tend to leave mine alone.

Ha, I don't claim to be smarter than the designers but after-market stocks, barrels, and the such that are readily available for the 10/22 make it a good purchase if you're into that kind of thing.

Price might be a bit high. I have seen them for between $400 to $600

I prefer a pump action .22,, but this has a cool factor.

Agreed.. Would have posted this as well.. I have one and also have the Ruger Mini 14 .223, Mini 30 7.62x39, and even a Ruger P90 .45 pistol.. Ruger is amazing

I'm happy with my S.S. Ruger 10/22, birch stock, w/ Bushnell scope. Have had it for about 15 yrs.

You can't go wrong with the Ruger 10/22. I bought mine in 1994 and it is still one of my favorite guns. Plus if you want to customize it, there are tons of options.

If you can ever spare the change and trade a magazine for a single shot, I would highly recommend the Springfield (CZ) M6 Scout, 410/22lr break-down rifle. If I could only take one gun with me, this would be it.

The Ruger 10/22 is highly modifiable, inexpensive, magazine fed .22 rifle. It is hard to go wrong with it. You can get a variety of sights (like tech sites) and turn it into almost anything. There is a noise benefit to tube fed being quieter, but magazine fed is just all around handy. Hard to go wrong with a 10/22

I tried a ruger 10/22 once in an attempt to replace a tried and true, but worn out Marlin 70. Ruger would fail to feed at least once every magazine, and the accuracy was HORRIBLE. The place I got it had a 30 day return policy, so i took it back. Luckily, they had a barely used Marlin 70 in the used rifle rack that ssame day, so I snagged it, and lived happily ever after.


My biggest complaint about about the Marlins is the iron sights are pretty crappy, unless you get the stainless model 60 version.


All that aside, find you an older Marlin 39A lever action-holds 19 rounds, and well,,,, comon, it's a lever action. How much better could it get???

That is pretty cool. The only thing I don't like about shooting is the shock wave bang. Plus, the turkeys around here are grouping in three to six, so I can shoot two or three because the first bang won't send the others a flappin'.

A pretty expensive turkey shooter, but ain't it neat though?

I shot one at a local range, fellow has an extensive Class II-III collection that he rents out, and it is quieeeeeet.

Outside of the action click, the noise is about as loud as what you get when you disconnect an air hose coupling, when using sub sonic rounds.

So, any love for the Marlin 795 or Savage 64 out there?
Looks to me like they're both budget options, though if the 10/22 is at Cabella's for under $200, it's definitely competitive.

I have a savage 64TRR-SR, no complaints other than its a little heavier than some other 22's i've shot. already comes pre-threaded for a silencer and with a picatinny rail. its just a good utility gun. if you wanted to seriously mod your gun, to make it look like an AR15 or whatever though, the 10/22 is a better option.

Though I am loathe to recommend Remington for anything for reasons I will not go into, the 597 I shot was dead nuts on at 100 yards. I was holding about 1/2 MOA shot after shot at a friend's house on a bench with bipod and something like 6x magnification. Therefore, despite my personal feelings about the company I would be able to recommend this .22. I believe they sell for around $235.

Thompson Center makes what may be the finest .22 autoloader I have ever shot. I do not recall the model, but it looks similar to a 10/22, only far better made and heavy-barreled. At over $400 it is not what you seek, but thought I would mention it. It is an absolutely superb rifle.
