Study reveals scale of ‘science scam’ in academic publishing

This Lawsuit Could Change Science

Science is crazy, but the craziest part is getting your work published. Scientists write it for free, review it for free, and then commercial publishers sell their work to universities for a big profit. Now, a psychologist in the US is suing the biggest scientific publishers. I had a look at the lawsuit.

These new scientific fraud cases worry me: Now also in material science

Correction to what I say at 01:56 -- He had 35 papers retracted, not 65, sorry about that. I mixed up the numbers. (Bad enough as it is!)

I’ve talked a lot about scientific fraud in the past. Now, investigations have found even more widespread examples of falsified research. Not just in psychology and medicine, but also in material science. Let’s take a look.

Academia is BROKEN! - Harvard Fake Data Scandal Explained
[29 June 2023] This week a top Professor at Harvard University was exposed for data FRAUD. The evidence is damning, and it is hard to see how Francesca Gino can argue her way out of it. This looks bad for Gino, but also it looks bad for behavioural science in general. She isn't the only example of data fraud in the industry either, so if you want me to cover more of this type of content, let me know in the comments below!

The Thesis that Killed Academia?

This is a brief comment on the recent social media episode in which a young woman attracted a lot of attention by graduating with a thesis on olfactory suppression in English prose. In this video, I try to put these events into context. I find it difficult to wrap my head around the sudden outrage. Let me know what you think about this.

Publish or Perish, Now with AI Slop
{Sabine Hossenfelder | 27 May 2025}

AI slop has already become prevalent across the internet (and in the classroom). But according to multiple reports, artificial intelligence is posing an increasingly serious threat to scientific literature, too. Researchers have uncovered a concerning number of AI-generated papers published in reputable journals, even experts can no longer identify AI-generated “science” images, and the amount of AI slop submitted to publishers will only increase as the technology continues to improve. Let’s take a look at what this means for the future of science.

Academia’s Scam Problem is Getting Worse

{Sabine Hossenfelder | 01 October 2025}

Academic research is deteriorating at an increasing pace. We’ve talked several times previously about how organized fraud is spreading in science, and today I have some recent stories that document this is becoming a global problem which has now reached Europe. America, brace yourself, soon this will hit you, too.

Hmmm. Never heard of Sabine Hossenfelder. Thought maybe this thread had some content from James Lindsey, before Zionism broke his brain.

How dare you blame people for doubting modern science?

•A large 2016 survey of 1,576 scientists found that more than 70% had tried and failed to reproduce another researcher’s experiment at least once, and over half had failed to reproduce their own results at least once.

•A landmark project that tried to replicate 100 psychology studies found that only about 36–39% showed statistically significant results again, implying that roughly 60% did not fully replicate under the project’s criteria.

•Efforts to reproduce influential preclinical cancer biology studies have reported that only about 11–25% of tested findings could be robustly reproduced, implying that around 75–90% of those specific high-profile results did not replicate as originally reported.

This is a small window into the rot of the modern biomedical system. This NPR segment gets it completely backwards.

We’re told that a breast cancer researcher at Harvard is losing a third of her staff because of funding cuts.

What the story doesn’t say: she is 76 years old, has produced little major research in years, and still commands an 18-person laboratory built on legacy connections, indirect-cost slush funds, and donors misled into thinking they’re funding imminent cancer cures.

Those 18 people are not the future of cancer research. Many are trainees with vanishingly small career prospects - used as cheap labor to prop up a lab far larger than her actual scientific output warrants. This is the medical school money pyramid in its purest form: one senior former administrator professor on top, a rotating underclass beneath, and the entire structure justified through the emotional manipulation of cancer rhetoric.

NPR frames the reduction of this empire as if it’s some catastrophic blow to biomedical science. In reality, it is the clearest indictment of the system we’ve built - a system where:

• aging PIs retain massive labs long after their most productive years
• Harvard and other nonprofits quietly subsidize them through indirects and internal slush funds
• trainees serve as disposable workers in an oversaturated job market
• cronyism dictates who gets resources
• cancer is wielded as a fundraising weapon

Reducing her staff is a long-overdue correction. The public deserves the truth. This is only a glimpse behind the curtain of how modern academic science really works.
