Student calls on CPAC attendees to stand through duration of Sen. Rand Paul’s speech

By Oliver Darcy, on Mar 10, 2013

A conservative student activist is asking attendees of this year’s Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) to stand throughout Sen. Rand Paul’s (R-Ky.) speech, as sign of solidarity for his historic 13-hour filibuster on the floor of the U.S. Senate on Wednesday.

Senate rules prohibited Paul from sitting during the filibuster of a vote on whether or not John Brennan would be confirmed as President Obama’s director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). The arcane procedural maneuver drew worldwide attention and at one point the Twitter hashtag “#StandWithRand” trended as number one worldwide.

Ryan Bolyard, president of the Hillsdale College Republicans, told Campus Reform on Thursday he would like to use Paul’s CPAC speech to give a visible representation of the online support he received last week.

“My goal is to show solidarity in the conservative movement with those that are willing to stand up and defend our Constitution and our personal liberties,” said Bolyard.

He added he hopes the entire audience will stand throughout the duration of Paul’s speech.

“I hope to have everyone at CPAC participate,” said Bolyard. “Those that do not hear about the event on Facebook will hopefully understand what is going on and join in.”

At the time of publication, 86 people have RSVP’d to the event on Facebook.

very symbolic and would make a great headline along with CPAC RANDSLIDE!

Not a good idea... its a great idea!

This is how Rand steps out of the crowd of Marco Rubio, Chris Christie, Paul Ryan, Jeb Bush and any other pretenders. This is where Rand becomes a powerful representative of the people that will not be denied, rather than some typical politician. No other will have the support of the people like Rand and the media won't be able to cast him as fringe.

Rand has already won hearts in a way that none of the others will be able to compete with.

I got goosebumps reading that. It's been a while since that has happened. Reminiscent of Ron's campaign. Finally.

Well, to do that and not make it look like some weird, cult-like deference, it needs to be clear this is a follow-on to the Twitter meme #standwithrand. I can just picture the little naysayers now, "smug Rand supporters stand during his speech like he's a diety, wannh wannh"

Exactly. Have some signs saying #StandWithRand or something like that.

Brilliant! And the filibuster is not even a week old yet, I think it will be clear why people are standing - and this time Rand gets to see the positive feedback not just have tweets read to him. I think he'll really be moved by this!

Perfect . . . the more that stand the better.

Some of the GOP establishment attendees won't even get it.
But Rand is sure to smile inside while speaking . . .

1:30 pm on Thursday Rand is scheduled to speak

I think they will "get it" alright. They just won't like it.
