Health Savings accounts are such a fallacy. As I understand it, they expire every single year or something. My firm pays for 100% of my healthcare, and I wish we could get more firms to do that, but when I worked for a firm that didn't pay for my healthcare, I rolled the dice and opted-out of HSA's.

There really isn't a good solution. You can't mandate people to stay healthy. You can't mandate people not fall ill with diseases they can't prevent.

All you can do is ask people to save-up for their own healthcare, and hopefully when health issues inevitably arise, they have some funds to pay for it.

HSAs will help people to save for their future medical concerns. Saving 1-2K per year for 20 years makes a lot of sense.

Dr. Paul should have vocalized his opinion of free market medicine in that question.. he sort of rambled, and I couldnt even understand what he was saying.. yes, I get it.. come home and save money overseas etc.. but that will save the govt money good. However, the federal govt shouldnt be paying for everyones insurance, so coming home isnt going to do anything to solve the medical problem. He should have said "complete free markets in medical care!" instead of rambling on about foreign policy.

I agree. But I think some people would instantly hate him because of that view, so he may have just been keeping quiet?

HSA's work best when you already know how much you will have to spend, otherwise you risk losing money with them. So if you know you have a huge operation planned they are great, but if you just want to use one for just in case its not such a good idea.

My husband is a doctor and they are *really* punished for their success. (when he was little he slept on a mattress in his mom's room that was kept under her bed)...

Insurance companies are evil.

Why don't they do a WRITTEN debate. Like the good ole ole days, or like scientists do. Much more depth, much more knowledge imparted onto us, and real answers with real details and less soundbytes (per capita anyway)

Listening to this guys I am deathly afraid, as somebody else mentioned, of any of the rest of them becoming President. It REALLY scares me. Romney is basically George Bush term 3, Huckabee is crazy religious and changes his campaign's direction based on what is getting the most press that day, and Giuliani's complete support of expanding the evil invasions of privacy brought on by the PATRIOT ACT as well as his freakish obsession with terrorism frightens me to no end. Thompson is lackluster and rarely makes mature, useful points while McCain shows no signs of America making any progression under his possible administration. I am afraid. VERY AFRAID!

.

QFT. We have HSAs and our premiums went up 20% because "we used it too much".

If the contest for number one is between Mister Blink and The Preening Dink, Ron Paul's gonna win.

Stupid but something that does bother me about Ron is his speaking skills during these extreme debates. When he is interviewed 1-1 he is great, clear, concise. When he rambles, it annoys me b/c it gives the others reason to question him. His fans are his fans, we are loyal, but he now needs to prove to the others why They should vote for him. That takes convincing!

Actually, currently HSA's expire at the end of year, and you loose any money you don't use. Some HRA's (Health Reimbursement Accounts) roll over (mine does), under CDP (consumer directed plans).

So McCain's answer to immigration is more Drakonian controls, that will impact Citizens as well. '

Ron Paul's answer is to address the incentives that bring them here.

hsa accounts and insurance is a red herring if you really want to solve the problem. The real problem is regulation.

regulation regulation regulation regulation regulation regulation.

med dental pharmacy vet schools etc graduate about 1/2 the number of Dr's that it would take to meet demand.

it is a supply/demand problem brought about by letting the AMA ADA etc regulate their own output. It chokes off supply just like a union does.

All of these clowns will throw open the border if elected.......here we go with Gods children!!

This is more interesting...

I know, I feel the fear as well. If ANYONE other than Ron wins, the nation is in deep, deep trouble.

Definitely! That frustrates me very much. He seems to have TOO MUCH to say and he is desperately trying to get his ideas in there quickly. THe format is what kills him!

I do have to agree, this is the best debate so far. I like how it's not focused on generated applause and trick questions.
