Heard on 'All (non-Ron Paul) Things Considered' that more than 1/3 of the primary voting in CA will be by paper ballots and optical scanners. I know the venal and incompetent media will be in a hurry to crown their favorite candidates and this is going to irritate the bloody hell out of them but democracy will just have to wait on the ballot counters.

The old punch cards were better. You could hold them up to the sample ballot and verify you punched the right holes. Too bad that some idiotic Floridian voters couldn't figure out how to vote correctly, and the politicians decided to spend millions on new electronic gadgets that fuel conspiracy theories.

Honestly, they should hand out a blank piece of paper and make you write out the name of the candidate you're voting for. If you can't spell it correctly, you're not informed enough to be trusted with the vote, in my opinion.

That's how they do it in Iowa.
