Stimulus deal struck

If you think manufacturing is this countries future then you are right. Those toys are imported, delivered and sold in America by Americans. Same crazy argument made about buying a foreign car back in the 70's and 80's. The dealer, the salesman, the repair guys and down the list are Americans. WTF cares where the product was made?

The manufacturing industry is what made this country strong sir.

By having only a service industry, what you described, we will eventually run down because we aren't producing goods to be sold on the world market. What good is a service industry if nobody can afford any services?

How is this a welfare check, just because it applies to those below the $75K mark?

I'm a married full-time student also working full-time and would qualify for this, yet I still pay a good chunk out of my paycheck for the fed. How is that welfare? It sounds a lot more like refunding the taxes I did pay all year, which sounds a lot like Dr. Paul's eventual goal...

How is this welfare again...?

I would disagree that the manufacturing industry is our future and no disagreement that it is our past. If it is to come back it will only be done with a Paul administration eliminating crazy environmental laws, minimum wage (tied to union pay) and a vast number of regulations. Then America may be able to compete. I don't see how we will ever be able to produce goods in competition with 8 year old Chinese kids making .25 a day but if you think it can be done go for it, sir.

Because some people won't be getting the check yet are paying for you to get it.

Its redistribution of wealth plain and simple.

I'm not even sure what I'd do if I recieve one....

Rip it up?

Spend it on college?

Donate it to RP (If the check comes early enough)

I work off the books, and I'm laid off anyway, but my girlfriend appears to be in the $1,200 range, plus we have 2 kids, which is apparently $300 a piece.

If we get $1,800 like it looks like we will, we're giving some to RP, and buying a years worth of emergency food supply.

Thanks big brother!

At first, I thought this was stupid, it's just perpetuating our current fiscal problems. Then I figured, I can always use the money and it would be nice to know the government won't have it. Now today I find out, that once again, money will be stolen from me and given to the poor. When will the middle class wake up already? I just wish the feds would use some lube now and then.

What really bothers me about this rebate is that it prefers those in lower cost-of-living areas of the country. Is that the point? I thought I saw "stimulus for the middle class!" somewhere....

I don't qualify for this rebate because my salary is a little higher than the cap, but I certainly live like a middle-class apartment-renter not-much-in-savings-yet person here in CA Bay Area.

It is, but I don't think you can get away with calling it welfare. People who haven't paid any taxes get nothing.

It is a welfare check for some and a refund for others. I have zero problem with rebate going out to people who pay taxes. It is a back door way of eliminating or reducing income tax. I think it should be based on a percentage paid instead of a flat rebate. More along the lines:

Singles making less than 100k get 50% back of what you paid
<500k get 25% back of what you paid
<1Mil or less get 10% back of what you paid
1Mil or greater 5% back of what you paid
If you paid no income tax you get no rebate. This would be a true rebate, not one just in name and I can't imagine any Paul supporter thinking this would be a bad thing.

But even with money going directly to people that didn't pay taxes is better than it going to a welfare program. If we have a welfare state I would much rather it be directly handing out cash instead of thousand of red taped filled federal programs with thousands of employees.

I haven't read anything that said people who haven't paid taxes get anything. Maybe I just missed it.

I thought it was a nice twist that the only way to actually try to stimulate the economy with a cash infusion is to give it to the people we know will spend it immediately. If we give checks to people who manage their money, they might hold onto it. Or worse, they'll use it to pay down their debt.

The good news is when we finally go completely socialist, we all get checks...

Leave it to the Marxist the god damned country put in power last year...

Tentative Deal Reached on Tax Rebates

By ANDREW TAYLOR

...Pelosi, D-Calif., agreed to drop increases in food stamp and unemployment benefits during a Wednesday meeting in exchange for gaining rebates of at least $300 for almost everyone earning a paycheck, including low-income earners who make too little to pay income taxes. Individuals and couples who pay income tax would receive rebates of $600-$1,200, and more if they have children.

You have to at least have an earned income of $3000 and you will get a $300 check even if you did not pay taxes. Anyone who gets any check at all will get an extra $300 per child. So some who get a check will get $$ even though they did not make enough to actually pay taxes. They do at least have to have had the earned income of $3000 so this will eliminate those who are on welfare and don't work. Also excludes those whose income is just from social security, disability, unemployment. You must have EARNED income to qualify.
