Ron Paul is facing an uphill climb if he wants to win his party's nomination. No, I'm not talking about his Presidential bid, I'm talking about his Congressional race. The FDH Lounge has the big news. Paul's getting out:

Troubled by internal polls showing insurgent challenger Chris Peden having pulled ahead shockingly in the Texas 14th congressional district, Congressman Ron Paul will be pulling out of the Republican presidential race in advance of his home state's March 4 primary, The FDH Lounge blog has learned.

My own source backs this up. Paul's campaign is looking at internal numbers showing Peden with a 43-32 lead over Paul, with the primary just weeks away. Conservatives have been rallying to Peden, including the folks at RedState, in an attempt to oust the anti-war flamethrower. 11 points with three weeks to go. You have to like those odds. Peden has been added to my slatecard of candidates to support, so throw him some love if you despise the Ron Paul anti-Republican contingent as much as the rest of us.

I know this is just some crappy blog, and I doubt either of them have "sources", and I suspect that they're just trying to rile up Paul supporters, but can someone in the know call the Paul campaign to confirm or deny the withdrawal and/or internal numbers?

Ron Paul beat out an incumbent in 1996, with the full weight of the GOP behind the incumbent. The attacks were much more vicious, and his opponent had a lot more money, a lot more name recognition, and a lot more support. In recent elections, he's been winning by 20% or more margins.

Somehow I doubt a no name challenger, running on a pro-war policy in an anti-war district (4:50 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-EywYDhPeY8 ) can pull off an upset. Just my thoughts.

Plus I doubt that he is pulling out of the Presidential race, 2 days after he released a video saying he won't be.

If I had to guess, this originates in Peden's campaign.

By the way, 43-32 numbers are actually not bad for us. Those remaining undecided voters will usually choose the incumbent. Also, remember that there are a couple of other non-Peden candidates in the race. I think a runoff would be tough for Paul to win, but he would get in one if there was one, at least.

There is no way an unknown challenger can be ahead of a popular incumbent, especially by 10%. Those numbers are pulled out of thin air. I doubt he has even 10% name recognition in the district.

If Dr. Paul does somehow lose to this neo-con filth, he should launch an independent run for both his seat and President. The GOP will be proven unreformable and worthy of destruction if this happens.

I don't know if he's behind, but I believe Paul is in a dogfight otherwise he wouldn't have basically suspended his Presidential campaign and gone down to campaign in his district. I still think he'll win because it's tough to beat an incumbent when the incumbent is more well known and has a lot more money. But Paul had to think that there was a reason to go down there in the 1st place. If he thought he was up by 30%, no reason to stop the Presidential campaign.

That's not legal in Texas. Although Paul could run in the Texas Republican primary and then drop out and be on the ballot in November as an independent, he cannot do the same for his congressional race.

What Joe Lieberman did in 2006 against Ned Lamont, losing the primary and dropping out to run independent, is not legal in 46 states. Texas one of them.

If Paul were to drop out of the race to run independent, which is highly unlikely but might end up being a reasonable move if indeed Peden IS polling well, he'd have to do it BEFORE the primary.

Look up Carole Keeton Strayhorn. That kind of dropping out.

Excellent point, unfortunately. Still, I find it difficult to believe that Paul could be down at all. Without a doubt, Congress is his main priority. Hell, remember before the 4th quarter money started pouring in, he still was spending most days of the week in the House voting. He feels it is the most important thing.

But we'll have to see. I may call RPHQ....

central to just about anywhere in the state. For example, Victoria is
roughly 2 hrs. 15 min. from Austin, 2 hours from Houston, 2 hours 15 minutes
from San Antonio, 2 hours from Corpus and about 2 hrs. 15 min. from the border.

Campaigning in his district puts him a hop, skip and jump from just about
anywhere in the state.
