I have seen missile launches at dusk. They are quite amazing. What you need to realize is that even though you are personally are out of the sunlight (dark), the missiles go so high that they (and their trails) are up in the sunlight. It gives them the illumination that looks so weird. You can also view satellites at that time for the same reason.

a scientific explanation of a possible way this could have occurred.

what I found interesting was that it looked like some sort of black hole opened up. Also it looks like there were 2 arms to the white spiral and it looked liked there were also sort of stacked and layered rings going out in front of the spiral, very proportionate, very symmetrical. Looked nothing like a rocket fizzling out.
