Speaking at Bob Jones U=Questionable Call

I thought the religious right pandering commercials were bad enough. Now he's speaking at a fundie university? Great...

23% of the SC voters in the 2000 primary were in Greenville - and it can't be denied that this area is full of fundamentalists, with BJU as its backbone (as far as the Republican support goes).

Not taking the opportunity to let 5,000+ in on our message would be the bad idea.

That being said, BJU definitely fumbled this one, albeit intentionally. Dr. Bob Jones III "unofficially" endorsed Romney, and that is why this wasn't a bigger event than it could have been.

I remember as a student they had a local judge speak, and it was required attendance for students and faculty.

We can't pick and choose who we want to support us- we need everyone; but that will only happen if they hear this message.

Maybe he was looking for the free publicity when the MSM uses it to try and label him again. Of course in SC this would backfire for the MSM because the locals get upset when the liberal media comes in and talks trash about their school. Voters would vote for RP to spite the MSM.

I see this as a win win for RP (atleast in SC)

That's a bit far fetched.

It's more than just a university. It's big in the homeschooling movement as well. They sell curriculum and a lot of homeschoolers use their stuff. Just another angle to ponder. ;)

I'm a staunch Roman Catholic and I utterly despise Bob Jones. However, Ron Paul needs to win Southern Baptist voters if he is going to be competitive in the South, and if we are not, we won't win the primary. I would just like to say to anyone else who is Catholic and supporting Ron Paul, understand that Paul is carrying the same message of peace and prosperity that the Catholic Bishops have spoke out for. He may yet win over the Baptists from the dark path they've been cattle prodded into. He is on our side, don't forget that.

Bad Call--Here's Why

I'm having enough trouble holding my people together without the campaign heading to Bob Jones University. Bob Jones III didn't even endorse us for gawd sakes. Don't forget that a ton of RP supporters are atheists, like myself, and other believers who are non-fundie. We have been willing to overlook our fear and distrust of American Fundies because we are confident that Paul will defend the separation of church and state. But rubbing our noses in it is a bad idea.

The campaign needs to make sure that they avoid anything that can be perceived as fundamentalist/racist and BJU ain't it. We're still solid, but I personally don't want to have to defend RP against stupid campaign mistakes. And it is ALWAYS the stupid mistake that undoes our hard work.

LOL their web page has pics of an asian girl, black dude, and blondie.. Anyways it's nothing to get worked up over IMO, I'm sure he knows the history of the college before he made his decision to speak there. Better things to worry about..

Yeah, this is not a comforting thing for all of the atheistic Ron Paul supporters like us.

I'm agnostic and think Dr. Paul should speak to every group that invites him and he has time to visit. If you think the atheist vote is enough to win the election please put your bong away for a while. If you are running in the Republican primary (which Paul is) then going to Bob Jones is fine. As long as he remains true to his message, I think it is great that the people at Jonestown have a chance to hear the message.

I totally agree with the first post. Its just completely wreckless, especially coming after that huge newsletter-media attack. What a pittiful campaign. There is no chance Ron Paul can win a general election if he doesnt understand public perception.

I'm a weak atheist/agnostic, but it doesn't bother me at all. Every extra vote is important!

Over 600 people crammed in to see him. He won't discriminate - that's why he can run for office with character and integrity as his attributes.

He spoke publicaly that if Mitt Romney were discriminated against because of his religion - that would be quite wrong. I'm paraphrasing but I was impressed to hear him say that...it's FREEDOM OF RELIGION, not FREEDOM FROM RELIGION.

LEK

Yes, but most people have the perception that Presidential candidates can speak at many MANY colleges. So it appears that Bob Jones University has some characteristic that draws Ron Paul specifically there. And what do you think people will think that characteristic is?

Just saying...
