I just saw this on the Daily Paul. Not sure if it's legit, but a lot of people seem to be excited at the possibility that Ron wants to finish the presidential race...

"So we all know Ron is making a special announcement on Jay Leno on September 4th. I know many of us are hoping it's that Ron is running Indy or third party. Some are hoping he will endorse Johnson.

I just got off the phone with someone very close to Ron and want to tell everyone that a third party run is possible. At this point that is not what the announcement is going to be. It's also not a Johnson or Romney endorsement, so says my well placed source. Again, take it worth a grain of salt, but I trust that this person is close enough to Ron to know.

Up until know I have believed that there was ZERO chance Ron would run third party. However, after my phone call I believe there is a glimmer of hope. It's too late for Ron to get on the ballot as an Indy, however Johnson has said in the past that he would step aside for Ron.

Now for the bad news..Ron does not think the grassroots would fully back him because of all of the Rand and Benton bashing that has taken place, but RON would LOVE to make a last major push for Liberty in the presidential debates..........."

I saw this earlier, but have a hard time believing it's true. Not saying the poster is lying, but perhaps either he or his source misunderstood something.

At one level, I would love to see Ron Paul run third party/independent, maybe taking Johnson as VP. Then again, I can't imagine any circumstances under which he would do it, after he said no many times before. Is it possible the authoritarian moves by the GOPe were so bad that he's open to it?

Why do people feel he's making a "special announcement" on Jay Leno? I've never seen anything to that effect.

There's a huge danger in getting your hopes up for this. A person can only take so much let down.

If he was going to run 3rd party, Rand wouldn't have endorsed Romney. End of story.

We'd back RON. And he could get matching funds. Does he have to use Benton? I'd back Ron regardless, but I'd really rather he use a true believer, and I have always felt Benton is a southern conservative, but not really one of us. And the communication, to me, suffers for it.

I'd much rather Ron use Wead instead, should something like this happen.

But I really, really doubt it will. I refuse to get my hopes up.

It would be incredibly stupid to do a third party run without coordinating with Johnson and the Libertarians. Also, the whole RepublICAN rally wouldn't make sense, setting up Rand, Benton and all of the Ron Paul officials saying to stay the course with the GOP. Yeah, third party run is not going to happen. Ron is done in presidential politics.

Wead also had some issues. He just snapped back faster.

I have no idea who this poster is, though.

I disagree. Rand is an intelligent politician who is aiming to make chances within the GOP to the GOP. Endorsing a third party run by his father would be political suicide.

It doesn't matter what any of you think, if there is a glimmer of hope, we must make it happen. There is absolutely no chance GJ can get in the presidential debates but Ron could.

After EVERYTHING we've all been through, are you all seriously out of energy? MAKE IT HAPPEN.

I wish that the resistance to the Americans Elect option hadn't been so strong. He'd be on all the ballots right now.

He never said he wouldn't. He said he had no intentions to.

But that was before all the RNC crap went down.

I don't think there is a special announcement. However, I also think there is about a .0001 chance Ron runs indy.

I'm beginning to think running third party is a good idea - All things considered. I am noticing on different forums - Non political forums - People who years already gave up on both demo and repubs are pissed .. Obama people are even angry at what happened to Ron Paul at the RNC. Maybe we should act on those emotions - use them to our advantage for Ron Paul 2012.
