Reddit plans to blackout, some of us are writing to encourage Wikipedia which has already indicated it might do the same, it would be great if Google did a blackout banner and I am trying to figure out how to contact them.

There is also this event: http://www.facebook.com/events/232028526874851/ where we use our facebook profiles to bring attention to SOPA. It may be a great opportunity to post the SOPA photo album suggested with messages about how Ron Paul opposes SOPA.

I'd love it if Facebook and Google blacked out for a day just for this. It's the only way to get people's attention.

Love this. Shared it on my FB, and definitely doing the photo-album thing. Great idea.

I'm wondering if we should do the photo-album on the 18th, or just start now?

I am thinking gather the pictures now but make the album/share them on the 18th so people's walls are full of anti SOPA photo albums on that date but hey, you can do whatever you think will be most effective.

A sample status update for the 18th.

I thought I would contribute to this discussion by offering a bit of historical perspective. Those of us who are old enough will remember when TV was three channels - and that's it. Hang your antenna, turn on the box...done. Yes kiddies, the Food Network is a new thing. CNN is an acronym for Cable News Network; Ted Turner foresaw where the medium was going and was the first to capitalize.

But I digress.

I offer this video as evidence...the movie and music industries understand the power they hold over the minds of the masses. The DMCA, SOPA, and the PROTECT-IP Act are not new animals. Nope. They've been pulling this shit since at least the mid-1970s.

Make of this what you will. I, for one, enjoy the comfort of knowing that they have been fighting this battle for 40 years, and while they have lost nearly as much territory as they've won, so to speak, the net result is what we are seeing today. They've gained enough ground, and when one takes into account America's irrational fear of all things terrorist, you have a highly reactive stupidbomb just waiting to go off.

Jane America will wave the Red, White, and Blue this July either way. She doesn't care. She doesn't know. And I doubt she has the mental ability to even understand why she should be pissed, or even scared, about SOPA.

Not until she can't get on her Facebook. Or her IncrediMail.

These are perfect situations where civil disobedience is more than applicable. As a unified group do not comply. Blacking out is simply not going to do much other than get a few headlines.

Do not comply.

I am confused, what do you mean by civil disobedience in this case? As in, you hope that if the legislation passes the movers and shakers in the internet world won't comply and that will be the end of it? I see a blackout protest as perhaps helping to get legislator's attention so this doesn't pass in the first place.

If facebook blacks out that will get a lot of people's attention who otherwise couldn't care less. I support RPF blacking out too. Twelve hours offline isn't going to make or break the grassroots, but it might get some people's attention who glaze over the info otherwise.

Counter-productive. We are informed.

You may be well informed Horn, but out of the thousands who use this site daily i bet there are many who haven't paid much attention to SOPA. If one of their favorite sites, RPF, was shut down for 12 hours that would give them time to consider the gravity of regulating the internet and also give them time to email or call their representatives.
