Complacent? Hell, some of them endorse it. You should see the comments from my sister on FB. It blows me away. Border line, "They have to do it for our country" type shit.

Ya, I have heard from these types as well. They are much like those who think we must sacrifice our liberty for security. How do you get through to these people?

You can't tell folks like this anything, you have to let them correct their views "on their own." Ask questions to get them thinking about a subject that leads to your point of view, but let them get there on their own. It takes time, but it works. It works better if you are perceived as "one of them," less so if you are perceived as neutral, and it's really tricky if you are perceived as a threat to their point of view. But in all cases, repetition is required.

You won't get a 100% success rate of course, but I have some friends that I thought were lost causes that are starting to come around after a few years.

Does she play sports? If so, pose a question to her in such a way that it is a similar scenario and see how she reacts.... then pull her in with the story of the bus. I try to use analogies as much as I can with such people, the conversation goes better that way.

I've tried that with her, dang I love her, but she will use any excuse to defend "the way it is". If I give her an analogy of a game, she says, "but this is not a game, it's reality".

If we turn the story around and say that liberty activists control the RNC and they cheated by diverting a bus of neocons, we would undoubtedly consider the cheating wrong, but also recognize that the act may have prevented a war with Iran -- much bigger stakes. I would drop the bus discussion and focus on the "for the good of our country" theme. If she's afraid of the Iranians, and the constitutional position of non-intervention is "dangerous," you'll never reach her on the bus thing. For most people, sadly, the end justifies the means. If you want to bomb Iran, diverting a bus of Virginians will always be rationalized.

I'd keep an eye on this Virginia Tea Party group for updates, they seem to be following it rather closely. (and I've browsed their site and their stances on most issues suggest might be one of those original Ron Paul Tea Parties, so don't be scared to visit this blog, but I wouldn't spam the comments section with pro-Paul stuff and scare them, either, in case I'm wrong on that)
