So what happens when the US attacks Iran?

They'll probably complain about it in public but not actually do much if anything about it. They might sell weapons to the Iranians, and China might take advantage of the situation and invade Taiwan while we're stretched too thin to deal with it, but that's Taiwan's problem. China will also probably stop accepting dollars and start converting the dollars it already has to something more stable. Russia will certainly enjoy the increase in oil prices, given that they're an oil producing/exporting country now, but other than that it won't really affect them. China will likely be a bit more hostile since they depend on Iranian oil.

China would love nothing more than for the U.S. to further squander U.S. wealth and power in another war of conquest.

China will be the preeminent super power of the future, and the U.S. attacking Iran will speed up the process.

I would expect some serious weapon aid from China and Russia to Iran through the Pakistan boarder. The US would suffer far more of a decline with a war against Iran than with Iraq, Iran is larger, far stronger, and their people harbor alot more hate for the US than the Iraqis.

The price of oil will go higher than you ever believed it could as the Iranians retaliate by sinking a super tanker or two in the Straits of Hormuz. THE US HAS NO DEFENSE AGAINST THIS AND CANNOT PREVENT IT. The US has been using SF on the Iranian coast for a while now - what do you think they are trying to do?

Europe will not help. Britain will not help. China and Russian will be drop shipping weapons and supplies to the Iranians. Putin hates Bush BTW.

You know it really depends on what exactly is done. A very specific strike on a limited target that didn't kill lots of civilians would probably not do a great deal. More people would hate the U.S., and there'd be international condemnation, blah blah. Iran would probably make greater efforts to kill Americans in Iraq, and might look at some other anti-US terrorism type attacks. But I doubt it would escalate into any kind of larger war.

If the U.S. seriously threatens the survival of the Iranian regime or people, then the Iranians will shut down the Persian gulf, probably aggravating China hugely, and pretty much everybody else who depends on oil. No telling what would happen in that case.

One thing I'd seriously be worried about though is the Iranians doing serious damage to our naval forces in the gulf. Massive floating fortresses seem so last war to me. Big juicy targets for mass quantities of cheap high tech missile systems.

I don't think they'd do much openly if we just did an air raid on some building somewhere. Covertly, they'd probably ship a few more pallets of those efp bombs over to Baghdad. But publicly, they'd play the aggrieved victim of American oppression.

As long as the US attack was brief, and over. In some ongoing kind of bombing campaign they absolutely would try to attack our forces.

For a comparison, look at how that recent bombing raid by Israel in Syria went down. Syria didn't do a damn thing openly or say much about the incident at all. That's at least partly because of the pause in shooting. It's like poker. Syria just folded, because they didn't feel like throwing more into the pot on that hand.

I think china and russia have huge economic interests in irans oil. i dont think they will take it too lightly. You already have russia getting pissed off about iraq and building bases to the left of them.

But nobody really knows for sure how it might turn out. Also doing that would definitely put us in a war for decades to come.

I still have a feeling Bush has plans on delaying the election.

American Conservative has a column written by a former CIA officer. He says that Saudi Araba and Israel have come to an agreement, which included discussios with Bush and Cheney, that Israel is going to attack Syria at the same time the US attacks Iran.

He asserts that the Israeli attack was merely a ploy to get Syria to switch on their new Russian-made anti-aircraft system. but Syria didn't fall for it.

It also says that the Saudis were astonished to find in later meetings with Rice and Gates that apparently neither the State nor Defense department had been briefed.
