Smoking laws, your thoughts

In my own state of Kansas there has been a bill that was introduced and passed that banned smoking in public places state wide. As if that doesn't make me mad (enough even though I don't smoke myself). The State is now in the process of banning smoking in any form private clubs, bars, resturaunts, ect. Get this though the places that will allow smoking is the State run Casinos.... So don't smoke in the privacy of your club that you pay for but feel free to light up a smoke in a government run faciluty. What are your thoughts on this issue?
 
Anti-smoking laws are perhaps even more immoral than smoking around those who experience adverse reactions to smoke, but whether or not it's one or the other is not up to any government to decide for us. The burden rests on property owners and smokers. Ultimately, we must rely on each other for respect -- it cannot come from coercive force.
 
My University recently became a "smoke-free campus." Students and faculty members are still smoking as much as they used to. There are now "smoke-free campus" stickers on all of the doors into buildings. The only thing that changed was they took away all of the ash trays and places for people to throw away cigarette butts. This new rule does not stop anyone from smoking. Now people are just throwing the cigarette butts on the ground and it looks terrible because the campus is littered with them.
 
If you can contain your smoke and not share it with those who do not wish to, that is not a problem. But when you are in public space, one person's choice to smoke forces smoking on those who do not wish to. If the air is filled with smoke, I don't have the option of not breathing it. The smoker is violating another person's right to not smoke which in some cases can have a negative impact on their health.

Should a factory be able to freely pollute air or water? Same issue.

So if there were no regulations on smoking in public places or public buildings that people will be couteous and simply not smoke around people who ask them not to?

"Hey- can't you see I'm smoking here? Can't you go do your breathing someplace else? You are interferin' with my rights here!"

It is a case of competing rights- the right to smoke vs the right to breath. Breathing is more important to life. I can breath without imposing a cost on you but you cannot smoke in a public place without imposing a cost on somebody else who chooses not to smoke.

If smoke was odorless and colorless like carbon monoxide would it still bother you? Do you bitch about heavy traffic or just smokers when walking down a busy sidewalk in a big city like New York?

The state needs to respect property rights. It should not make any laws as to how a person uses his own property.

If a property owner doesn't feel the need for handicap access or parking, it falls on the owner as to if he wishes to sacrifice the business offered by people who would use them. The same goes for smoking. If those who don't like to be around people who smoke, know smoking is allowed in those establishments, then they have the option of not patronizing those establishments. The state should have no say on the subject. This goes for building additions, towers, windmills etc. It's the property owner who should decide how he uses his property, and no one else should be hindering what they do with it.
 
My thoughts?

Look for complete tobacco prohibition at a state level within the next three years. My money would be on one of the usual suspects, NY, NJ, CA or IL to be first.

Another vector for the system to put more people in cages, have more SWAT raids, confiscate more property and extort more money.

All because people have a giant stick up their collective asses about burning a leaf.
 
I wont be shock if they out right ban all smoking and cigs for your own health of course. When tax payers have to pick up the medical bills, Congress can pass it off as price reduction. Along with any foods they deem Unhealthy. To cut down on the cost of medical care.

I'm glad you only use forms of energy that do not put off pollution. You must be in great shape from biking or walking everywhere you go.
 
I don't have a problem banning it in public buildings but on private property;which includes bars,restaurants, etc., I oppose.

Thanks. that is exactly what I do. I don't even own a car or use public transportation to work. I am within easy walking distance. Two bikes and no car. And no, I am not just saying this.

Sounds like a ridiculous level of hypocrisy to only allow it in State run Casinos.

These kinds of laws should not be allowed at the Federal level. It would be a State or local issue. Indoor public smoking was "banned" in California a long time ago, and even smokers like the result. It's really not a big issue. A prohibition on growing, possession or selling would be a completely different story; then you face the high likelihood of Police abuse and wasted tax-payer money.

What is your definition of a "public space?"

Government defines "public space" as any privately owned business that is open to the public.

Is this also your stance?

Yep, cause we all knew how well Prohibition works. I wonder if getting elected to a government position entails most people getting hit with a Retard Ray that makes them morons? As you said, more reasons to throw people in cages.
