So says an article from Economic Rant when referring to the makers of "Meltup" (Inflation.us).

Agree? Disagree? If not silver, is gold the better investment?

All the character attacks on the source aside, I think it is the best investment. It has the capability of reaching 5, even 10 times it's current dollar-value in relatively short order. It's not like fiat will stop pumping out of the presses to try to bail out every failing pension fund, state budget, etc over the foreseeable future. Not many asset classes can claim that sort of potential. And even if the dollar-value crashed you still have the silver!

It's anybody's guess...

Silver could be the best investment in the world today. It is not a given. The supply of silver has not been keeping up with demand for several years according to some "experts." If that is true, AND the markets become truly free markets, then silver may become more valuable than gold for a period of time... until more silver can be mined. Keep in mind that the "Law of Supply and Demand" is a law.

Right now, virtually all the markets are controlled and manipulated. All commodity prices are subject to an unlimited supply of money when needed to favor the economic positions of the elite (central bankers distortions). Since markets are manipulated and controlled... the best way to beat the market is to "join them" and get inside information. i.e. sell your soul.

If, for any reason, the fiat money system collapses... PM's of all sorts will have been a good investment. For instance, I'm growing a garden. If someone needs some potato's, beans, & vegetables, etc. I'll take a PM in exchange, but they can keep their worthless hyper-inflating paper and electronic "money" in their wallet. I'll have no use for that.

but i just want to know where all these information about "theres not enough silver in the world" is coming from, i think its all started by inflation.us

Silver is absolutely not the "best investment in the world." Things like good usable land, a greenhouse, and some type of fuel can all be significantly better.

Must have some kind of super-psychic here.

Hell, a bag of hard marshmallows would be better than FRN's at this point.

Yea OK buddy, can you take a piece of silver, modify it and employ it to meet most all of your needs, get hundreds or thousands of percentage of return on the investment, and it doesn't matter whether bullets are flying or not? You know, you come off as pretty arrogant. That's right, I'm super-psychic, but you super-genius.

You don't know what is going to happen in the future, nor do you have any idea of what kind of return you will get from the other things that you mentioned. Unless you're a super-psychic, you can't tell if you are going to be forced off of your prime farmland, or if your fuel will be used to burn your greenhouse to the ground. Silver at least is portable, with most people able to fit it into a little red wagon without difficulty.

Further, greenhouses require effort to produce any gain, same as land (assuming you want to use it for production, and are not speculating in its value). Fuel degrades rapidly unless it is stabilized, in which case it degrades within a year or so--not a great investment.

When bullets are flying, what use is your land or greenhouse going to be? If you are forced to flee, you lose everything. Silver can be taken with you.

And yes, I am a genius, not that such things matter in the real world.

I can construct a makeshift greenhouse in a week with $200 worth of metal and plastic from home depot. Surely, you can find other things to "invest in" outside of a greenhouse.

Does that mean my large hoard of greenhouses is going to waste? :p

Silver is the #1 conductor of electricity. It has the highest reflectivity of all metals. It has unique properties as a catalyst. It is also a very popular anti-microbial agent in medical applications. There is no suitable substitute for it in several applications. You computer, your ipod, you electronics, all run on Silver. In this century, we consumed 80% of the Silver stockpile that we amassed above ground since the days of the Romans. The question is, how long does the other 20% get us? The mining industry has not been able to mine enough Silver to meet the physical demand from the market. At some point in the next 10 or 20 years, a sever supply squeeze will materialize which will force prices to skyrocket. Whether the market prices this in before that event or after is anyone's guess. Point being, it hasn't happened yet, so yes, Silver is a home run as a long term investment. You must be patient for that home run to clear the fence. In the meantime, you just have to sit tight and be satisfied with the 10-20% annual returns it has given us the past few years.

I was under the impression that all of the official stockpiles were gone, and that we are currently meeting demand by using up ~100% of production (which meets something like 75% of demand), with the balance coming out of private hands (thus perhaps the rise over the last few years?). But I'm not sure, I'm not thinking very clearly today.

You assume I haven't already diversified. I hold nearly 300oz of physical silver. I bought the majority of it at about $10/oz. My greenhouse has already made me many times my return on silver. Yes, I know I don't know the future, but I can never imagine my silver providing more benefit, both in inherent security (i.e. food) and for cash flow (allowing me to invest in all kinds of things) than my greenhouse.

And yes, I am a genius, not that such things matter in the real world.

I'll perish before leaving my land. I have my greenhouse tasks highly optimized to require little labor, and it's easy to teach someone if I need any help.

I can store diesel fuel for 15 years.

You are right.. Genius doesn't matter too much in the real world. I know as well.
