I was explaining to someone the other day that all this is is about getting the masses very comfortable and used to the idea of "free money." Like an addict, once they're hooked it's very hard to ween them off peacefully.

This is just more welfare coming down the road. We will soon be at the point Idiocracy was at - nothing but dumb people left who sit in front of their tvs all day doing nothing.

Seems like a valid criticism whether it is principled or not. Worth noting Trump pushing for $2k stimmies is a big reason this bill passed. It put the Georgia senators in an impossible position and caused them to lose their runoffs.

It is a valid criticism. My post is an expression of my frustration that the same people who ignored or downplayed any such criticism for the past four years will suddenly find themselves to be true believers in fiscal responsibility yet again

But there were rationales for supporting Trump's COVID stimulus bill...

There was the "prevent an economic crisis" rationale:

There has been such a massive buildup in private sector corporate debt. If you do nothing, you could have years of 20% unemployment. That situation won't hold. The bolded part in the article below is why I favor the nuclear weapons the Fed and government are using but I think we are in for a lot pain and potential systemic risk. The problem is this is a Faustian bargain. These actions just get us through the short term This whole thing is a massive experiment for high stakes and I am not so sure we are going to come out it as a great country.

The country needs to reduce leverage to survive. This isn't over when the virus abates.

Wall St loves them. Crony contractors and donors love them. Average people get a few crumbs. That's not what I ever envisioned helicopter money being but ymmv.

Once Fedcoin CBDC is rolled out in the midst of a collapse, directly into accounts, maybe then I'll consider it helicopter money though.

Sure, that helicopter has been flying for a long time. It usually hovers over Wall St. and drops it all there, but this time, it hovered over Wall St. and Nancy Pelosi's house until 90% of the load is dropped, then it sprinkles that last bit randomly to the masses.
