Republican Sen. Rand Paul told a Louisville chamber of commerce group Wednesday that President Obama and GOP challenger Mitt Romney are neck and neck in seven or eight state, and “we have to win most of them to win.”
Speaking to the media before addressing members of Greater Louisville Inc. Wednesday at The Olmsted, Paul laid out his concerns contested government seats around the country.
Paul said are seven or eight states that are evenly divided between Obama and Romney, he said. “And we have to win most of them to win,” he said.
There are third-party presidential candidates, specifically Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson in New Mexico and former Rep. Virgil Goode in Virginia, who could split the Republican vote and cause Obama to win, Paul said.
Virginia in particular is an important state in the presidential election, and if voters gravitate toward Goode it could make the difference between a Republican win or loss, Paul said.
“Virginia could make a difference, because Virginia is going to be very tight and if the Constitution Party candidate gets three or four percent, that could be enough for the Republicans to lose,” he said.
He does not believe, though, that it is fair to ask those candidates to drop out of the race.
“No, I mean it’s a free country, and we have rules on getting on the ballot,” Paul said. “It’s actually very difficult to get on the ballot, and I think (Johnson) could have an impact there.”
It’s up to the Republican candidate to find common ground with those voters that may side with the third-party candidates, Paul said.
“I think the only way to keep those voters in the party is if you’re the nominee of the party you need to appeal to those people who are either Libertarian or Constitutional Conservatives and say, ‘Stay in the party because I am going to be sincere about balancing the budget, I am going to be sincere about cutting some spending,’” he said. “But it’s going to take some work to keep those people in the party.”
Paul said he believes the Republican Party needs to mix it up with candidates in traditionally Democratic states and appeal to third-party candidate voters to stick with the GOP.
“It’s tougher and tougher for Republicans because we don’t compete very well in the West Coast, we don’t compete very well in New England,” he said. “To give up all those votes, then you really have to win the rest of the country.
“Those areas where you’re not competing, maybe a Libertarian Republican would do better in California, or New York State,” he said.

Which means there isn't a chance in hell of Romney winning this thing barring some unforeseen event.

unforeseen event like Romney announcing he wants Dr. Paul to be part of his administration and lead the charge on the fed audit? I would love to hear that news.

I love what Rand has to say here. I thought he might actually start going off on third-party candidates, but instead he said that they have every right to be on the ballot, and the Republicans should respond by picking up some of their message. Dead on accurate.

I keep telling people that we'd all vote for Romney if the Romney was serious about allowing silver money..

Romney needs to earn our votes.

Time is ticking...

Agreed...

A lot of people are leaving the party, whether they are going indy, third party, etc. If the GOP wants to be able to win races and compete with the Democratic party as a majority party, it's going to need to figure out how to sincerely appeal to those voters.

Here's an interesting question I've been asking R's lately. "What, specifically, are the top 3 stances that are making you vote for Romney over Obama and are you going to hold him accountable for implementing the changes you desire?"

I've asked the question to 6 different people so far...... Guess what the 100% response was.... "He's not Obama"..... WTF?!?

I then ask, "What 3 policies are you concerned about if Obama is re-elected and you are expecting a President Mitt Romney to stop?"

THEY CAN'T ANSWER THAT QUESTION EITHER!!!!!!!!!

ARGGGGGGGGH!

It's not an election of ideas, it's a personality contest... That is what we've been reduced to in our country.

@DGambler: I'm not surprised. It's not about issues; it's always about which team is represented in the Oval Office. The same actions they abhor by Obama will be embraced by the likes of Limbaugh, Hannity, Beck, et al if Romney wins. And the same actions that are now tolerated by Obamabots will be reason for massive protests if continued by Romney should he win.

Good on Rand.

Indeed! Does anyone know of any other sitting politician (besides Ron Paul) who would willingly even *mention* any of the 3rd parties in a positive way - let alone grant them the sort of legitimacy that Rand does here (by using them, in effect, to threaten Republicans that they had better "toe the line")? "Rand is a sell-out," my ass ...

So basically, Rand is giving Romney the advice that he himself has employed, according to his supporters here: it doesn't matter what Romney intends to DO, just as long as he makes a token gesture to 3rd-party voters by way of some meaningless rhetoric. Got it.

I've known this for some time, but I'm always shocked when I experience it firsthand.... Especially those that I know we'll and love.

How do we change it? And quickly? Is that even possible?

Education. We need some voices of our own that are to liberty what Limbaugh and Hannity are to neoconservatism. We need them accessible in the same way that Limbaugh and Hannity are (not just on Internet radio, but syndicated on local stations that can be picked up in your car and at work)...and we need them to be informative and entertaining so that people will look forward to listening. And of course, for all of that we need LOTS of money.
