Sen. Rand Paul Challenges Sen. McConnell to a Debate Regarding His ‘Ukraine First Policy’

Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) challenged his Republican colleague, Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY), to a debate regarding his “Ukraine first policy.”

In an opinion article in the Courier-Journal, Paul slammed McConnell for vowing to go after the “isolationist movement” in the Republican Party, specifically in terms of monetary support for Ukraine. While McConnell had announced in February that he plans to step down as Senate minority leader at the end of the current term, he has said that he has plans to remain in the U.S. Senate.

“Mitch McConnell has pledged to fight ‘GOP isolationism’ in the remainder of his career,” Paul wrote. “I doubt that his self-appointed quest will improve his support among Kentucky voters. In fact, McConnell has the lowest approval rating of any federally elected official ever!”

Paul went on to reference how a poll from Monmouth University conducted between November 3 and December 4, 2023, found that McConnell had a six percent approval rating and a 60 percent disapproval rating among Americans.

“Anytime he wants to debate his Ukraine first policy with me in Kentucky, bring it on,” Paul continued, adding that the people of Kentucky “know that McConnell is not fiscally conservative.”

Anytime McConnell wants to debate his Ukraine first policy with me in Kentucky—bring it on.
The absence of intervention is not GOP isolation, but rather a policy of informed neutrality.

Mitch McConnell has pledged to fight “GOP isolationism” in the remainder of his career. I doubt that his self-appointed quest will improve his support among Kentucky voters. In fact, McConnell has the lowest approval rating of any federally elected official ever! A recent Monmouth University Poll showed McConnell with a 6% approval rating and a 60% disapproval rating. So, anytime he wants to debate his Ukraine first policy with me in Kentucky, bring it on.

One thing is for certain—Kentuckians know that McConnell is not fiscally conservative. In the past year, McConnell voted for Biden’s trillion-dollar infrastructure plan, Biden’s trillion-dollar spending bills, and nearly $200 billion for Ukraine. The total deficit from the Biden/McConnell spending spree will be $1.5-$2 trillion this year.

Borrowing money to ship it overseas is irresponsible

McConnell and the internationalists maintain that anyone who opposes the U.S. borrowing money to send it abroad is an “isolationist.” No, Mitch, that’s fiscal conservativism. No matter how noble the cause, borrowing money to ship it overseas is irresponsible.

During McConnell’s tenure as leader of the GOP caucus he’s voted for and cheered US military intervention in Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, and now Ukraine. McConnell, like McCain and other neocons, believes that anyone who opposes military or monetary foreign intervention is somehow an “isolationist.”

LMAO. Rand is tired of his shit.

While I don’t expect McConnell, this late in the game, to embrace or understand fiscal restraint, I would hope, at the least, for him to present an honest argument.

It is certainly brazen to declare you’ll spend your final hours as an elected official thumbing your nose at the voters who sent you.

Anti-interventionists should quickly and forcefully object to the using of the word "isolationist". Isolationism implies that certain politicians want NO engagement with the other countries of the world. Not so, as we know. "Anti-interventionists" are generally open to trade with many countries, but not to entangling alliances and meddling in the internal, domestic politics of other countries. That hasn't been the case since about the 1840's.

The "Isolationist" brand was hung on the anti-war movement in the run-up to WWII to great affect, and the movement hasn't really had any real political significance since then.
