How is this for target practice?

A breakthrough in precision bullet technology for small caliber firearms will make striking a target an easier task. Two researchers at Sandia's National Laboratories created a self-guided dart-like bullet able to strike a target more than a mile away.

The self-guided 4-inch bullet prototype has been successfully tested in both computer simulations and field testing -- where bullet speeds have reached 2,400 feet per second. The bullet differs from missile technology, in that the self-guided bullet has an optical sensor that can detect a laser beam on a target, which allows the bullet to steer toward a target.

Oh great, now one no longer need anything but the most rudimentary sense of marksmanship to kill mundanes by the baker's dozens.

These are the sorts of technologies that must be treated in one of two ways: utter worldwide banning or dissemination to the general population. The former will fail catastrophically, leaving the latter as the only reasonable assurance against an increase in the already dizzying acceleration of global tyranny.

In other words: I want one.

They have a laser that is gun mounted that can mark targets 1 mile away?

I don't really believe them.

I don't believe the laser is gun mounted.

This was supposed to be the path the bullet took:

Don't play laser tag outside when these are on the market.

First, how do you know the laser is gun mounted and not wielded by a painter?

Second, powerful lasers are commonly available. A 40-watt laser should do the job with no trouble at all. 100-watt is available as well. That is a very large candle.

So then the countermeasure might be a multi-laser device so that the guidance did not know which laser to track?

laze from space spray within range.

really removes the danger from killing people

My dad used to sell lots of equipment to the Mexican military. There are gun mounted lasers than can easily reach over 1 km.
