Secretary of Education Takes Aim at "White, Suburban Moms" Over Common Core Criticisms

Posting in general politics with just a link is posting fail, IMO.

“It’s fascinating to me that some of the pushback is coming from, sort of, white suburban moms who — all of a sudden — their child isn’t as brilliant as they thought they were and their school isn’t quite as good as they thought they were, and that’s pretty scary,” Duncan said. “You’ve bet your house and where you live and everything on, ‘My child’s going to be prepared.’ That can be a punch in the gut.”

Truth is a lot of people think their Congresscritter or school or police force is pretty good but some of the other ones are pretty bad. IMO, most of those folks are in denial about how good it is for them and their family. For example, sure, New England has the best grade performance among government K-12 schools in the US. Still though, students do better when in private schools, even in New England.

he Common Core was designed to elevate teaching and learning. Supporters say it does that; critics say it doesn’t and that some of the standards, especially for young children, are not developmentally appropriate. Whichever side you fall on regarding the Core’s academic value, there is no question that their implementation in many areas has been miserable — so miserable that American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten, a Core supporter, recently compared it to another particularly troubled rollout:

You think the Obamacare implementation is bad? The implementation of the Common Core is far worse.

Failure is never a deterrent to progressives.

The position of the Glorious Leader (and his courtiers) on this is the same as Obamacare. You are too stupid to know that your school curriculum (insurance policy) is crap and we are going to force you into a proper one. Your protestation just show how ignorant you are and in need of shepherding by US to do what is in your best interest.

On the other side of the fence, representing the uncastrated rams in the flock to sheepdog Duncan, are people like Ms. Fowler in OH.
Sarah Fowler: Home-schooled board member places Constitution and parents ahead of government

Fowler guards her opinions on education reform and choice, instead often quoting the Constitution and research from such organizations as the Pioneer Institute, a Massachusetts-based research organization that favors school choice and opposes implementation of the Common Core of academic standards.

She answers a wide variety of questions on accountability, religion, human sexuality and curriculum by saying local school boards, not the state or federal government, should make the bulk of decisions. And whenever possible, parents should shape their children’s education.

...

“Well, we live in a society or a government structure where the Constitution limits the role of the government,” she said. “And where the Constitution limits the role of the government, family structure starts. And so in each of these jurisdictions — whether it be home school, private school, Christian school or public school — the role of the state ends where that of the family begins.”

It was through the home-schooled network, Ohioans for Educational Freedom, that Fowler said she learned of the opening on the state school board and decided to run.
