Screw Rush if they don't want Rand playing their music....

wait, what? :X

I heard this yesterday from a staffer. I guess Rush doesn't allow their music used with any political campaign or group. It's one of Rand's favorite groups. They've asked for them not to do it anymore.

No biggie.

They do (sort of) have a point. However if Rand's campaign is at an event with a venue that has a blanket PRO license (from ASCAP, BMI, or SESAC) and Rand's campaign chooses to play Rush, then there isn't anything the band can do about it.

probably Rand wouldn't want to play it against their wishes.

See, I think you are right on all events EXCEPT political. I'd have to look it up but, remember "Born in The USA" and the Reagan Campaign argument.

The safest route would be to go with somebody who performed at the Rally for the Republic to do the theme song.

I remember hearing a rumor that the guys in Megadeth were fans of Ron..:D

That (the title of this thread) was my immediate reaction as well. However, I am not at all sure the ASCAP/BMI licenses held by event centers to cover music there does NOT cover use RAnd may have made of this. I don't know about the supposed fundraising video and wonder if that wasn't a supporter effort instead of Rand's.

He needs to be on the right side of the law, but it doesn't matter about the law if the band is trying to get publicity by opposing use by someone more in the news than they are.

Just dump the songs.

No loss.

Well an event is an event, however there are privileges of attribution, integrity, etc in the world of copyright. So it's quite possible that some court case somewhere decided that political association was definitely something the artist gets to decide.

Mostly politico's don't want to use a song if the band objects because it turns a positive into a negative to have the band object.
