School cuts Bible references from Christmas play

PAINTSVILLE, Ky. (AP) – Johnson County Schools have cut Bible passages referenced in an upcoming performance of “A Charlie Brown Christmas.”

The Lexington Herald-Leader (http://bit.ly/1NpqIud) reports when students perform the play at W.R. Castle Elementary School Thursday, the scene in which the character Linus quotes from the Bible is set to be deleted.

Principal Jeff Cochran said all Biblical references were removed from the play after receiving a message Friday from Superintendent Thomas Salyer.

Salyer told the newspaper Tuesday that Christmas programs across the district were being reviewed for possible modifications of religious references after receiving a complaint.

Protesters upset about the decision gathered outside the school board’s office Monday and Tuesday.

Salyer says he made his decision based upon the advice of his attorney and state officials.

Parents recite censored Bible passage during ‘A Charlie Brown Christmas’ play

By Jessica Chasmar - The Washington Times - Monday, December 21, 2015

Audience members at a Kentucky elementary school production of “A Charlie Brown Christmas” recited the monologue spoken by “Peanuts” character Linus after the biblical passage was censored from the play.

Johnson County Schools Superintendent Thomas Salyer sent a memo earlier this month directing schools to make sure they avoided endorsing any particular religion in their holiday performances this year.

W.R. Castle Elementary School Principal Jeff Cochran subsequently censored Linus’s lines on the true meaning of Christmas, leading to protests outside the school district offices in Paintsville for several days, the Lexington Herald-Leader reported.

In Thursday’s performance, no student in the play performed the scene in which Linus recites from the Gospel of Luke: “Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes lying in the manger. And suddenly, there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying, ‘Glory to God in the highest, and on Earth peace, good will toward men.’”

But people in the audience recited the lines, Mr. Cochran told the Herald-Leader. A video showed several parents joining in.

After that, “there were a few more lines in the play, and that was the end of it,” Mr. Cochran said, adding that he was disappointed in the audience’s response. “I wish that they had let the kids do the play.”

its not a war on christmas, its a war on leaving me the fuck alone with your forced religion. i wish when i was a church goer that id have realized how rude it was to do this kind of thing.

The Biblical quotes that I referenced in the "I'm a trans woman" thread were deleted out of there as well. Why would a moderator post this thread seemingly complaining about the censorship of Christianity, and then delete the Chistian posts out of the other thread?

As you were told in the other thread, they weren't deleted. So... yeah.

Yeah, they weren't deleted per se, but they were censored out of the discussion.

Don't worry, as this thread shows, Christians are very used to be censored out of the discussion in this country. That is why God is going to destroy this country and make its people slaves. And I promise you, He will.

In my experience, Christians, including you on this forum, tend to dominate the metaphorical conversation rather than being censored. From what I have seen, it tends to be the other faiths that are drowned out by Christians arguing that the others are all wrong. This of course does not apply to all or even most Christians -- I know many who are not so fire-and-brimstone and refrain from passing judgement, knowing well who will be the judge in the end.

If some else had said that, I might not have felt it necessary to say this. But coming from you, that quote comes off rather ironically, because you tend to post aggressively against faiths other than your own (including other Christians even), which can have a chilling effect on people wanting to share their faiths with others, because they might just want to share, but then you try to turn it into an argument. See the thread that was supposed to be just about posting worship songs for an extreme example.

You are not being oppressed. You are not being persecuted. But you are persecuting everyone else.

That makes no sense. The original post of the trans woman thread was a presuppositional rejection of the Bible. If others can assert their worldview, then Christians should be able to as well.

At the same time Yieu, I have a hunch that as a non Christian you would not be bothered in the least if Christmas play included the bible quotes. Correct hunch?

If you don't want religion in a show then: DON'T DO THE SHOW. CHOOSE SOMETHING ELSE THAT HAS NO RELIGIOUS REFERENCES.

It is usually against copyright law to change a show in any way.

Rocket Science.

You do assert your worldview. To the point that you try to tell everyone else that they are wrong and you are right in an aggressive manner.

Of course, that's correct. When I see a bible quote, I can feel warm fuzzies the same way that I do from reading a Bhagavad Gita quote, depending on the meaning of the quote. I do not feel our faiths have fatal differences, as we have faith in the same God, though my religion does have differences with the Christian religion.

Exactly. This is not so much a war on Christianity as a war on religion and any non atheistic beliefs.

Maybe, but the stories that make the news are usually Christian censoring, not Jewish or Muslim celebrations/practices etc.

Well, I can't ever recall hearing of any pageants or events at public schools where they read quotes from the Torah or Quran, so it would be tough to censor them if they don't exist. Maybe we should start having such events; but then you'd have some Christians switching sides and arguing for the side of censorship...

Certainly.

It is interesting that they did a show, possibly the only "Christmas" special that briefly talks about the actual purpose of the Christmas holiday, and edited out that portion. They have so many other choices for a pseudo-Christmas show. Instead of an actual "Christmas" show it could be about:

- Shooting your eye out.
- A misfit reindeer.
- Setting booby traps for house burglars.
- A talking snowman.
- A green mountain monster that steals toys.
- Ghosts torturing an old fiscal conservative.

You forgot the snow monster that marches through the town threatening people with his broomstick and showing disdain for the police.

Not my fault you have been leading a sheltered life.

That's because Christianity is the majority religion here. Marxists hate religion. They want a global state religion. That's why the Chi Coms have cracked down so hard on their native religions as well as Buddhism in Tibet.

That makes sense.
